Kate Garraway gets hope for Derek's health battle seeing plants 'fight for life'

Kate Garraway has said seeing nature “fighting for its life” gives her hope for her husband Derek Draper’s health battle.

The Good Morning Britain host, 53, has been struggling with her husband, also 53, being hospitalised ever since he came down with coronavirus months ago.

The mother-of-two made a recent appearance on Gardeners’ World and Susanna Reid asked her about it on Monday’s Good Morning Britain.

Susanna, 49, said the episode had been “fascinating”, with Kate planting bulbs with the hopes of Derek coming home in time for them blooming next spring.

Kate explained she’d found a special connection with nature during her family’s difficult time.

Kate Garraway likes weeds as they are ‘fighting for their life’

She said: “The garden is past, present and future in one place.”

The I’m A Celebrity 2019 contestant went on: “By planting plants and nurturing them to grow gives you hope for future.”

But rather than being a big fan of pretty roses or delicious vegetables, Kate said she had a connection with something far less desirable.

She told Piers Morgan, 55: “I like weeds. Something about them fighting for life.”

On Gardeners’ World, Kate said that her ventures in gardening were influenced by her hopes for Derek’s recovery.

She said: “It was rather sad because the radishes came, they’re one of Derek’s favourites. We ate them and he still wasn’t better.”

But Kate hoped that Derek would be back in the spring to see the bulbs that she planted bloom as “the place will be full of colour”.

Derek was hospitalised in March after contracting Covid-19 and was put in an induced coma which lasted 13 weeks.

He woke up in July but is still recovering in hospital in what is a long and slow road.

The deadly virus has left Derek with clots in his lungs, holes in his heart and even caused him to become diabetic.

Doctors have told Kate that there is a chance that Derek might never recover due to the devastating damage done to his body.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV
