'Daddy Matt' Hancock branded new I'm A Celeb heartthrob as he wins TikTok teen fans

Controversial MP Matt Hancock appears to have set pulses racing on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! after fans dub him a “heartthrob”.

The former health secretary, who has dominated the spotlight and appeared in several bushtucker trials on the show, has developed a dedicated fan club on social media site TikTok.

A number of accounts dedicated to the politician have been created in the last week, most of which praise his efforts in the jungle with some even dubbing him a heartthrob – and “Daddy Hancock”.

While some appear to have been created ironically, others seem to be genuine, with people expressing their apparent admiration for the West Suffolk MP.

Comments posted below the videos seem positive with some even describing him as “cute” and “fine.”

Clips of the former Tory frontbencher taking part in trials and chatting to his campmates have also been doing the rounds on the app.

One person wrote: “I love him bro I don’t know what problem people have with him.

Another read: “I feel for Matt. They are all bullying him in my eyes and it’s not right no matter what he did.”

Other comments posted below the videos included: “Matt’s actually so sweet,” and one that read: “He’s actually perfect don’t care what anyone says.”

The trend has drawn comparisons to politician Ed Miliband, who found himself the subject of teen social media fandom seven years ago when he took part in the series.

But despite the flattering comments, Matt still has many viewers up in arms as campaigners flew a plane over the camp with a message for him, which read: “Covid bereaved say get out of here!”

Organised by campaign group 38 Degrees – which is working with Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice – the 35ft banner circled the Australian camp for two hours.

Mr Hancock has been front and centre of the series since he joined as a late arrival last week, being voted for the majority of the trials and being crowned as camp leader.

Many viewers expressed their boredom at what had become “The Matt Hancock Show”.

Last week Mr Hancock said he “messed up and fessed up” to the rule-breaking affair that led to his resignation during the Covid pandemic.

He said he “fell in love” with his former aide Gina Coladangelo, with whom he breached social distancing guidance when they were caught kissing in his ministerial office.

He told campmates: “I messed up and I fessed up. I resigned and it’s no excuse but I fell in love, right? That also had a lot of other consequences obviously.

“That’s been hard. I obviously brought it on myself, so yeah… it’s been tough.”
