Coronation Street legend Chris Gascoyne says he would return to the cobbles despite quitting the show after 23 years.
His character Peter Barlow left Weatherfield on Boxing Day, as his wife Carla gave him a one-way ticket to sail around the world with a pal. Actor Chris, 55, decided to leave the ITV1 show to tackle new projects, but the door is open for him to return.
He said: “Of course, I’ve not ruled it out, it’s been such a part of my life. I’ve grown up with so many people there but I need a rest and to look to do something different – I’m not getting any younger.”
Actress Alison King, who plays Carla, revealed she was in tears as she filmed their final scenes together.
Chris added: “The thing that upset me was walking away from the people I work with and I don’t just mean the actors.
“I’ve known all these people for nearly half my life.” Former Rovers Return barman Peter has been involved in a string of high-profile storylines, most recently when he ran over and killed serial killer Stephen Reid, played by Todd Boyce.
This comes after Coronation Street fans shared their thoughts online as they claimed that Peter Barlow will return to the soap after his final scenes.
Rejecting the idea that he is gone for good, one wrote: “Peter will come back in couple years married to someone else.”
A second added: “Goodbye Peter. I’m sure he’ll be back in the future. #Corrie. While a third penned: “Bet Peter is back in 10 years.”
A fourth posted: Peter will be back in 10 years with a bottle of vodka in one hand and a girl 20 years younger than him in the other.” Chris previously opened up about his final scenes, admitting he felt “moved” by the final scripts.
“When I read that last script, it was emotional, not because I was leaving, but I genuinely, genuinely felt moved by it,” he shared in a chat with the BBC ahead of his exit, “I think it’s as well-written script as you’re going to get at Coronation Street and I think most people will have had exactly the same thing in their life, so they’ll identify with it.
