The Masked Singer aired its final tonight (Saturday), with the identities of the three remaining characters revealed – and fans weren’t surprised to learn that it was a certain 80s pop icon as Wolf
The Masked Singer’s grand finale hit the screens on ITV1 tonight, revealing the secret celebs behind Dressed Crab, Wolf, and Pufferfish in a much-anticipated special episode.
But it seems viewers weren’t exactly gobsmacked to discover that Wet Wet Wet legend Marti Pellow was the man behind Wolf, having flooded social media with their hunches over the past eight weeks.
“Who else had a song called Angel Eyes…Wet Wet Wet. Wolf is Marti Pellow. He hardly disguised his voice tonight,” one eagle-eyed fan tweeted before the final showdown.
Another chimed in on X: “I’ve said it’s Marti Pellow since I heard the first few lines sung weeks ago. Never once been mentioned by the panel, then tonight when Maya said Angel Eyes I thought at last. Then she said ABBA, I give up.”
Reflecting on the series, a slew of clues seemed to nudge towards Marti being the voice behind the mask – take the VT stuffed with umbrellas, likely nodding to his iconic 80s pop band name, reports the Mirror.
The star also peppered in hints about his band days, with a “wolfpack” T-shirt making an appearance in the VT. Plus, he reminisced in one clue package: “It’s making me reminisce on the good old days, being overseas and hanging with the gang.”
Wolf also disclosed in one episode: “High school is where I sniffed out my pack. Now this wolf is ready to go my own way.”
Marti, 59, established Wet Wet Wet back in 1982 with Neil Mitchell, Tommy Cunningham, Graeme Clark, Mark McLachlan and Lindsey McCauley when all six members were students at Clydebank High School.
However, Marti declared in 2017 that he was departing the soft rock band to embark on a solo career – which aligns with the clues.
During the semi-final, Wolf expressed his surprise at being “still standing” – which is also the title of one of Marti’s solo tracks.
Meanwhile, in one VT, a cameraman is spotted donning a mitre, the traditional ceremonial headgear of bishops, potentially referencing Wet Wet Wet’s single Love is All Around featured in the popular Richard Curtis romcom Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Pufferfish was crowned as winner, with the celebrity in the costume revealed to be musical theatre star and Les Misérables actress Samantha Barks.
“I’ve had the best time, I really have had the best time,” she told the panel. Dressed Crab came second and was unmasked as Grammy award-winning music artist Gregory Porter.
He said: “Sometimes I’m singing all them serious songs, but this was fun. This was just straight-up fun.”
