Grand Designs fans were flabbergasted at an “awful” transformation of an old-fashioned Victorian-style home that saw it become more “like a new build.”
The Den, in Tighnabruaich, Scotland, appeared on tonight’s episode, which was dedicated to properties that had a shot at making House of the Year 2022.
The property, which looks over the Kyles of Bute, joined two flats and simultaneously clashed Victorian and new build styles together.

Owner Shona Doherty gave presenter Natasha Haq a tour of the property, showing how some of the unique, old-style features of the interior were adapted to have a new function.

However, the beauty of the property was concealed and preserved inside a ‘zinc cube’ that viewers seemed to dislike.
Channel 4 Presenter Kevin McCloud, described the project as “a futuristic zinc cube, wrapped around a breathtaking double-height space designed for 21st-century living.”
He added: “But the memories of its past lives on in its carefully conserved and exposed Victorian fabric.

“What was once two cramped flats is now a single spacious home. A basement now houses the bedroom and bathroom.
“Above that, the ground floor and first floor have been knocked through vertically forming a vaulted open plan cooking, dining and living space – topped by a mezzanine studio.”
However, fans didn’t seem impressed at the property, which was on the long list for House of the Year, as they thought it was “awful” that it the owners had been able to cover the beauty of the historical building.

One Twitter user wrote: “The Den is my least favourite of tonight’s offerings.”
Another tweeted: “It’s really awful! I’d really love to see presenters saying what they really think!
A third added: “That poor eviscerated house at the Kyles of Bute.”
“Don’t like the Victorian house at all. Especially the odd extension.,” a fourth wrote.

One user even suggested that spotting black cladding on the show is a drinking game, writing: “Black cladding! Everyone drink.”
Others even wondered how the owners got permission to make the changes, asking: “How did this one get planning permission?
“The Den owner even said it looks like a new build.”
