Elton John Allegedly Signs Deal With Netflix for New Documentary

    WENN

The upcoming project titled ‘The Pillars of Hercules’ has reportedly been developed by the Rocket Man’s longtime guitarist Davey Johnstone for a long time.

    Jan 5, 2021
AceShowbiz – Sir Elton John has reportedly signed up for a special NETFLIX documentary.
The music legend was the subject of one of the top films of 2019 when Taron Egerton played him in the “Rocketman” biopic, and it has now been confirmed he’s set to give fans an even deeper insight into his crazy life with a new documentary, which is believed to include many of the parts left out of the movie.
According to Britain’s The Sun newspaper, “The Pillars of Hercules” – inspired by Elton’s middle name, Hercules – will cover events set in the ’70s, including never-before-seen backstage footage of the singer and the late Beatles legend John Lennon.
Elton’s long-time guitarist Davey Johnstone has been working on the documentary for years and is now hoping to do a deal with Netflix.
“(The documentary features) stories within the Elton John Band which weren’t shown in the Rocketman biopic. Davey has Elton and his husband David Furnish’s seal of approval,” a source told the newspaper.

Davey previously put the documentary on hold for six years to avoid it clashing with both the “Rocketman” movie and Elton’s Farewell concert tour as he didn’t want fans to be inundated with new content out of fear nothing would “do well.”
He told the Greatest Music of All Time podcast, “It was entirely right that I should do that as I did not want to get in the way of those projects.”
“If it is too diluted then nothing does well. I had a lovely conversation with David (Furnish) the other day in which they were really happy that I was going ahead and doing it again.”
“Quite honestly I would never do anything, especially of a documentary nature, about anything we did without them being OK with it. So with this documentary we are in the throes right now of putting together all the last things we need.”
“There are two more interviews we are looking to get and we will probably be finished with all the recording by late January and then we will go into editing and we will be ready about Easter.”

Elton John Sick and Tired of Playing 'Crocodile Rock' at Every Concert

    WENN

The ‘Rocket Man’ hitmaker jokes that he would rather ‘kill’ himself than play ‘Crocodile Rock’ again as he wishes he could play the more obscure tracks from his back catalogue.

    Jan 2, 2021
AceShowbiz – Sir Elton John has joked he’d “kill (himself)” if he has to perform “Crocodile Rock” again.
The “Rocket Man” star is retiring from touring and once his final concerts – which have been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic – have taken place, he wants to take on a small residency somewhere and play the more obscure tracks from his back catalogue because he’s tired of playing the same hits night after night.
“I’m lucky to have so many great songs to play every night. But there is a point in time where you think, ‘I don’t really want to play this anymore’,” he told Record Collector magazine. “There are things like Original Sin or (Gotta Get A) Meal Ticket that I haven’t really played before – not enough anyway. But if I have to go back and play Crocodile Rock again, it’s like, ‘I’m gonna kill myself.’ ”

“So, after I’ve finished this tour, I don’t want to play some of these songs any more. I’d like to do something like Kate Bush, where I can do a show and play some of these songs that are deep cuts.”
The “Tiny Dancer” hitmaker has performed with a number of huge artists over the years, and remembers being in the presence of “true greatness,” which was often so overwhelming, he was “frightened.”
“I just loved (Aretha Franklin). She sang her last show at our AIDS Foundation event in 2017, at St. John The Divine Cathedral,” he recalled. “I’ll never forget it, because I was standing by the stage with Roseanne Cash and Sheryl Crow and we were just crying because she was playing the piano and she was so ill and yet she came on and did Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
“And afterwards, she said, ‘This is it I’m never going to sing again – this is the last thing I’ll ever do.’ But those are the moments you know you’re with true greatness. Sometimes that’s frightening.”

Bernie Taupin Gets Candid About His Fear Over His Work in Elton John's 'Jewel Box'

    WENN/Adriana M. Barraza

When talking about the eight-disc set, the longtime collaborator of the ‘Rocket Man’ singer admits he felt fans would find their very early songs an embarrassment.

    Nov 5, 2020
AceShowbiz – Bernie Taupin initially fought the release of Elton John’s “Jewel Box” collection because he feared their early songs would be an embarrassment.
The eight-disc set features 60 previously unheard tracks, stretching all the way back to 1967, and the rocker’s longtime collaborator admits he felt fans would laugh at their first efforts.
“To see the product of our initial attempts at songwriting 50 years after the fact… it’s a little alarming to reconvene with,” the lyricist tells Rolling Stone. “I wasn’t sure I wanted people to hear these things, to be honest. I thought I might be embarrassed by their naivete, especially the very, very early work.”

      See also…

“After all, at that time I was really faking it. The whole idea of how to construct a song was foreign to me. The idea of verse/chorus/bridge was big-pants terminology to me. Back then, I was throwing it down on the page. It was brain-to-pencil sort of free-form. It was a gradual process to find my voice. There was a lot of mimicry involved, a lot of purloining from what was currently a hit.”
“I was floundering and grasping at straws.”
And Bernie admits the pair’s 1968 song “Regimental Sgt. Zippo”, which appears on the new box set was “an affectionate nod” to The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”.
“Can I honestly say that was a tip of the hat to Sgt. Pepper? Maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t,” he explains. “But it certainly proved that we were hanging on the coattails of things that were currently popular.”

    Oct 21, 2020
AceShowbiz – Teyana Taylor recently unveiled a music video for “Lose Each Other”, with Elton John making a special appearance in it. Following the release of the visuals, the collaborator held a joint Instagram Live session and the songstress could not hold back her tears when the veteran musician praised her music.
Teyana was already emotional the moment Elton told her, “I love what you do. I love how you sing. For me, you’re one of the exciting new artists of the whole last three or four years, and for me it was a personal honor that you reached out to me to be in the video. I had no hesitation because I love you very very much.”
Later, when Elton started gushing over her latest music video during the livestream, Teyana broke down in tears. “The video is one of the most beautiful videos. … It’s just like a work of art. I think you put so much of yourself into the video, I can see you in the video putting your thoughts and ideas. In a statement issued on the same day as the release of the music video, the songstress admitted she never expected Elton would agree to get involved in the production.
“As we were working through treatment ideas and solidifying logistics for the video, an international phone number calls me… and for a second I almost didn’t answer, but my intuition spoke, I answered. All I hear is: ‘Hello darling, it’s Elton. I’d love to do your video!’ I freaked out,” she recalled.

  • Elton John Fires Back at Rod Stewart for Criticizing His Tour and Retirement

    Instagram

The ‘Rocket Man’ singer suggests his friend-turned-enemy Rod Stewart is a hypocrite for complaining about his tour while the latter is promoting his own road show.
    Oct 15, 2020
AceShowbiz – Elton John has reignited his feud with Rod Stewart by slamming his former pal for criticising his retirement plans in a new chapter of his autobiography.
The pair’s relationship soured when in a TV interview Rod said Elton’s big announcement in January 2018 that he would go on one last mammoth world tour and then retire was “dishonest” and “stinks of selling tickets.”
In the new paperback version of Elton’s autobiography “Me”, the “Rocket Man” singer details his fallout with Rod and says he won’t take lectures on rock authenticity from someone who has moved into crooning in later life.

      See also…

“I certainly didn’t feel like I needed a lecture on the feral spirit of rock and roll from someone who’d spent most of the last decade crooning his way through the Great American Songbook and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” he writes, according to Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper.
“What’s more, I thought he had a f**king cheek, complaining about me promoting a tour while he was sat on a TV show promoting his own tour.”
Rod, who blamed the offending comments on his drinking before the interview, recently revealed that he and Elton are still at odds over the remarks.
“We don’t talk to each other anymore. Big falling out,” he said on U.K. radio host Chris Evans’ “How to Wow” podcast. “Last time I emailed him I said, ‘I’ve got this football pitch, would you like the boys to come up?’ You know, cos they both love football,” before revealing he had received no response.

  • Elton John Criticizes Modern Pop Music: They Are Not Real Songs

    Instagram

The Rocketman criticizes modern pop singers/songwriters as he describes today’s chart records as ‘bits and pieces,’ in which he’s not interested at all.
    Aug 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – Elton John isn’t a fan of modern pop music, insisting chart hits are “not real songs.”
The “Tiny Dancer” star opened up on the state of the music industry in an interview with BBC Radio 6 Music, and confessed he’s a fan of singer-songwriter Father John Misty because he writes “proper songs.”
“He reminds me a little bit of me the way he writes songs,” Elton offered. “You look at most of the records in the charts – they’re not real songs. They’re bits and pieces and it’s nice to hear someone write a proper song.”
“There’s a boy called Conan Gray who has a song called Heather and he’s about 22, he’s from America and he’s the only person in the American Spotify Top 50 to actually write the song without anybody else,” the “Rocket Man” singer insisted. “Everybody else there’s four or five writers on it and this boy’s going to be huge.”
Elton went on to explain, “I like people who write songs. And there’s plenty of people that do but a lot of them don’t get played on the radio because they’re too sophisticated and we get songs made by a computer all the time and I’m not interested in that.”
The star spoke with the outlet ahead of the “Record Store Day” re-release of his debut album on Saturday (29Aug20) – but he said the new pressing won’t encourage him to start revisiting his catalogue anytime soon.
“I don’t listen to any of my records any more. I just don’t do it. I’m not one of these artists that sits there compiling stuff from all the vaults and stuff like that,” he stated.
“I’m more interested in what’s coming next than what went by,” the “Crocodile Rock” star smiled.

  • Charlie Puth Finds It 'Pretty Cool' to Collaborate With Elton John

    WENN

Revealing that their joint project has been completed and will be released soon, the ‘Attention’ hitmaker spills on what he learned from working together with the ‘Rocket Man’ icon.
    Jul 4, 2020
AceShowbiz – Pop star Charlie Puth is still in disbelief at landing the opportunity to work with Sir Elton John.
The “Attention” hitmaker first teased fans about the “really special” collaboration back in May, when he posted a photo of himself with the “Rocket Man” icon on Instagram.
Puth reveals the track is now finished and will be released “soon,” and getting to hit the studio with his music idol was really a dream come true.
Marvelling at having Sir Elton’s contact details, he told U.S. breakfast show “Today”, “He just emailed me, which is pretty cool. It’s pretty cool seeing ‘Elton John’ pop up on your phone.”

Puth reveals the two musicians are neighbors in Los Angeles, and although they had discussed the idea of collaborating, the 28-year-old never thought it would actually come to fruition.
“We met at a restaurant in L.A. – this was back in December – and he said, ‘Yeah, let’s write,’ and I didn’t expect him to hit me up the week after, and be like, ‘We’re neighbors, we should just use your studio…’ ”
The artists quickly discovered they had completely different methods of songwriting, “He said to me something really interesting, he said, ‘You know, Charlie, I write music when lyrics are given to me, and you write lyrics after,’ which is true, so we write very differently, but he said, ‘Let’s take a crack at it anyway.’ ”
And their efforts paid off. “(Elton) sat down and played the entire three minute and three second song – that is done and people will hear soon. He played it in one take, the piano part,” he shared, “and then I wrote the lyrics. We did it reversed…”
