In the play and film, Shirley is a housewife from Liverpool and longs for her life to have a huge shakeup.

Having conversations with the walls in her home because of her unloving husband, she is thrilled when her friend invites her on a trip to a Greek island, where she finds the joy in life again.

Speaking of her new role, Sheridan said: “As a mum now myself I’m delighted to be playing theatre’s best-loved mum and I am honoured to be entrusted by Willy Russell to bring his Shirley to life once again in the West End.

“Now, to practice cooking chips and egg!”

The stage show will run for 12 weeks from February 17 2023 at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London’s West End.
