Alan Carr says he was so “ugly” his early career saw him banished to the kitchen of a cafe as a “dish-pig”.
The comedian said bosses kept him hidden out the back and he would be summoned out by a bell and shouts of ‘dish-pig’ to collect dirty plates. Much to his embarrassment, the cafe was right next to a popular gay nightclub – meaning he could be spotted putting the bins out by those on a night out.
However, one perk of the ‘character building’ job was he could throw off his washing-up gloves and join a night out at the end of a shift. Speaking on his Life’s A Beach podcast about the job he had at a cafe in Sydney, Australia, the 47 year-old said: “I was dish-pig there.

“You know how sexy [Sydney’s] Oxford Street is? All the gays are fit and sexy. Well, because I was ugly I was made dish-pig, so I was just in the back and they’d ring the bell and go ‘dish-pig’. And then I would come with my marigolds and put all the dirty washing – I became a bit of a celebrity.”
Alan, who admitted he lasted ‘just a couple of months’, added: “It was character building. And then there was ARQ nightclub around the corner and all these gays would be queueing up to go in there and that’s where I’d have to put the bin.
“ARQ was great, I’d throw my marigolds off, I’d go there and party – oh I love being young, you wouldn’t think of doing it now would you.”
