Elton John donates $1 million to Covid-19 relief fund to protect people with HIV

Music legend Elton John has announced his HIV and AIDs foundation will launch a new emergency fund to help protect the most vulnerable in society from coronavirus.

In a short video posted to his official Instagram account, Elton, 73, explained he hopes the money will help people prepare of Covid-19 on the frontline.

Elton said: “For almost 30 years, my foundation has prioritised the most vulnerable people to HIV to end the aids epidemic and we’re committed to this amid the COVD-19 crisis too.

“Distributing medicines, testing and preventive treatment is not as simple as it was a few weeks ago so our new COVID-19 emergency fund will help frontline partners to prepare for and respond to the pandemic and it’s effects on HIV prevention and care for the most marginalised communities.

“We must keep up momentum or else the results could be disastrous for people living with HIV and other infectious diseases. We’re with you, we’re thinking of you, we will not leave anyone behind”.

Over the past week new cases and deaths from the virus have skyrocketed around the globe.

In the UK alone on Friday 708 people tragically died from the virus bringing the total number of dead to over 4,300.

It is reported that 41,903 people have tested positive to Covid-19 across the UK.

Keen to get his message across,Elton captioned the clip: “Today, I’m proud to announce that my Foundation Elton John Aids Foundation is launching a $1million COVID-19 Emergency Fund to make sure that our frontline partners can respond to the effects of COVID-19 on HIV care for the most marginalised communities around the world.

“Now and always, I’m committed to not leave anyone affected by HIV behind.”

The Rocketman singer the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992 when the virus was at its most deadly.

Since then he has helped raise over $450 millionto help beat the virus.
