Lorraine Kelly spoke about her friend Kate Garraway whilst talking to guest Darren Buttrick on the show today, who had come out of an induced coma after falling ill with coronavirus.
Darren revealed he was given a 50% chance of survival after being placed on a ventilator, and Lorraine said that stories like his would inspire hope in her friend.
Kate’s husband Derek Draper fell ill with coronavirus and was taken to hospital on March 29, where he was put into a medically induced coma.
Whilst Derek has been taken out of the coma, he is now lying in a minimum state of consciousness, meaning he can’t walk or talk.

As Lorraine spoke to the guest, she said: “You were essentially a fit man with no underlying health conditions.
“This reminds me of what is happening with our Kate and what she is going through with her her husband Derek
“This is very similar and I really hope a case like yours gives her hope too, I know it does actually, because whenever we speak to someone like yourself she says so.”
Darren opened up about his time in hospital, revealing it was touch and go about whether he was going to make it.
He said: “It was the darkest day of my life, March 20, I went in the ambulance for the second time to New Cross hospital.
“Within a couple of hours and various tests the doctors said to me I had no option but to be induced with a ventilator and a coma in intensive care.
“I’d Googled it a couple of days before because I knew I was head to that and I didn’t want it.”
He added: “I told the doctor I really don’t want it, can you just not give me the oxygen?
“She said you’re past that, this is the only chance of saving you and at best, it’s 50/50.
“So to make those calls to my wife, hearing her sobbing, and my parents who were asking to trade places with me, that was the hardest bit.”
Lorraine continues tomorrow at 9am on ITV.
