Meghan Markle 'desperate' for Oscar from £112m Netflix deal, say friends

Meghan Markle is reportedly hoping the deal she and Prince Harry made with Netflix will land her an Oscar.

It was confirmed last week that the couple secured a £112million deal with the streaming service and are planning to produce a range of ‘inspirational’ programmes.

The former Suits star, who played Rachel Zane on the show, left her acting career behind when she married into the royal family.

However, now she and Harry have renounced their royal titles, it’s claimed Meghan, 39, hopes to finally get the Academy Award she’s always wanted, according to the The Mail on Sunday.

A long-time friend of the star told the publication: “An Oscar is all Meg has ever wanted. She used to practise her acceptance speech in the mirror with a hairbrush when she was a kid of seven.

“She would also practise her signature in preparation for all the autographs she would give.

“Her absolute dream was to achieve the EGOT – the grand slam of show business – which is winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award.”

The insider also said that ‘her acceptance speech has been ready for 30 years’ and suggested that she might now be finally able to use it.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are believed to be looking into producing documentaries, films and kids television shows – despite neither of them having a background in TV production.

In a statement released by the couple, they said that their lives “have allowed us to understand the power of the human spirit: of courage, resilience, and the need for connection.”

Despite Meghan and Harry’s joy over the Netflix deal, nine out of ten Brits say they will snub the pair’s new Netflix shows.

According to a YouGov survey, 64% of people said they were “not interested at all” in watching shows produced by the couple.

And a further 20% said they were “not very interested”, The Sun reports.

The rest said they did not know – meaning nine in ten aren’t planning on tuning in.

A total of 70% of men had no interest compared to 59% of women, and 79% of over 65s aren’t fussed either.
