Modfather Paul Weller has admitted getting in to a fight with Sid Vicious – giving him “a slap” after being headbutted by him.
The 62-year-old former frontman of The Jam said that he and the “punks” from the Sex Pistols were often at odds with each other in the early days.
And he said that the fight with Sid put the Pistols star in hospital.
Asked if he had “got on” with punks, the Going Underground singer said that “trendy” punks didn’t like him and his band because of their choice of clothes and style of music.
He said: “The trendy, niche side of punk didn’t like us because we were too suburban, and we tuned our guitars up and wore suits, so we were seen as outsiders.
“There were a lot of posh kids involved in that little scene, in that little clique.”
Asked if he got in to a boxing match with Sid, the singer admitted he had.
Weller said: “I did have to give him a slap.
“He came up to me and he nutted me, expecting me to cry and fall down. And I had to return the favour, as it were.”
