American Idol and Rising star Casey McQuillen has reflected on the moment she was told no stylist would dress her.
The singer who recently released her latest single, Skinny, says she was filming her “first big-budget” music video in Los Angeles and was working with a director who she saw as a role model.
However, the director who Casey “really looked up to” left the songstress shattered as she revealed that stylists in the area refused to dress her for the music video.
Casey didn’t disclose the name of the director but expressed that she had nothing to do with the stylist’s decisions.
Speaking exclusively to the Daily Star, she said: “She called me and she was like ‘Babe, so annoying, I have called every stylist in LA and none of them can dress you, I didn’t realise you were plus-sized, but I guess you’re plus-sized.’
“‘Normally, you would never call an artist back, we don’t have a big enough budget’, she told me I needed to go to the mall and buy a dress.”
Casey added: “I’m on the phone with her and I say all the things I know as a good feminist I’m supposed to say, like ‘God, this is so ironic, screw the industry, this will be a hilarious story’.
“My song about body acceptance, I can’t get dressed for the video, so I hang up the phone and turned to my mother and I burst into tears.”
She added: “I think I was a size 10 but I knew what I was supposed to say, ‘it’s the industry’s fault, I’m perfect the way I am’ – there was a part of me that believed.
“The trauma of that is really tough, I tell you that being somebody who is constantly photographed for a living doesn’t affect the way that I perceived my body, it’s really, really hard.”
Reflecting on her new single, Casey said: “The way that we wrote the song, I had a rough experience coming out of the pandemic and I was looking forward to restaurants, bars, dates and shows opening.
“I’d gained weight during the pandemic and not only did I feel I was being perceived differently by people in those social settings than I was used to but more importantly, I was perceiving myself differently.”
Casey is currently on tour with UK singer James Morrison and says that she has been getting positive feedback from audiences who connect with her message from the song.
“It’s been amazing, there have been specific instances where people are going through really difficult times in their lives, struggling with anorexia, bulimia and these heavy topics,” she said.
She added: “I happen to come along as an opener to a show that they’ve seen and some f these people are very deeply affected by the song and to me, that is just an unbelievable honour to have the ability to possibly make an impact on somebody’s mental health journey, it means the world to me.”
