Kate Garraway hit back at her Good Morning Britain co-star Ben Shephard when he accused her of “pulling at the heartstrings” on live TV.
ITV star Kate made an emotional plea to viewers on Thursday (October 13) ahead of the National Television Awards in London that evening, where she was up for an award.
Kate was nominated in the Authored Documentary category for her film Caring For Derek, which shows the constant care she has to give to her husband Derek Draper, who became the UK’s longest suffering Covid patient.

She told viewers: “I don’t think it’ll be glory but it’ll be lovely if it was, because caring, whether professionally or for the unpaid ones that do it for love, and there are millions of them, it rarely gets glamour. So it’ll be lovely for them to get a sparkly sort of award, wouldn’t it?”
Susanna had just said she’d love to “bathe in Kate’s glory” and Ben agreed: “Yeah,” but he jokingly accused Kate of tugging at heartstrings with her poignant words.
He was talking to GMB’s showbiz correspondent Richard Arnold, who was giving viewers a sneak peak at the NTA ceremony from London’s OVO arena.
He said: “She’s pulling at the heartstrings, Richard. She’s pulling at the heartstrings!”
Kate quickly hit back at Ben as she said: “No I’m not pulling at heartstrings!”, but she couldn’t help laughing at Ben’s jest.
Ben, who of course is very proud of Kate’s caring work, continued to tease her as he said: “She is, she’s pulling at my heartstrings…”
Richard then agreed: “She is!”
Garraway won the Best Documentary last year for Finding Derek, but her sequel Caring For Derek gives a follow-up insight into his recovery.
Kate is nominated alongside Katie Price, Paddy and Christine McGuinness, late Wanted singer Tom Parker and Julia Bradbury.
She recently revealed that Derek is back in the hospital after continuing to battle with complications after contracting sepsis in August.
Speaking to The Sun, Kate said: “Derek is back in hospital after developing sepsis that again threatened his life and we are again fighting to get him home.
“But I remain constantly inspired by those around him – not just for their expertise but for their loving care.”
