Disney Pixar’s new highly anticipated movie Lightyear seems to have flopped at its opening weekend.
The film, which is a prequel for the character Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story, has had one of Pixar’s worst-ever opening weekends at the box office.
It was released both in the states and the UK on June 17 but didn’t manage to dislodge Jurassic World: Dominion from the top spot at cinemas.

According to Insider, Disney bosses predicted the film would take around $70 million on its opening weekend although it only took roughly $50.5 million in America.
In terms of other Pixar flicks that flopped in its opening weekend, Lightyear is down there with Ratatouille which raked in $47.2 million back in 2007, The Good Dinosaur and Onward.
On movie database site IMDb, Lightyear only has a 5.2/10 rating, however, on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s got a rating of 75%.
The reason behind the film not doing as well as expected could be down to it being released not long after Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World: Dominion.
This meant that over Father’s Day weekend many audiences could have opted to see the other films instead.
According to UNILAD, those films took $44 million and $58 million on the opening weekend of Lightyear, sandwiching the Pixar movie between strongly performing blockbusters.
That being said, there’s potential for Lightyear to be a success as Disney Pixar fans saw a similar thing happen with the film Coco.
The 2017 film opened at $50.8 million in the US and then went on to be a huge success and take $210 million in the states and over $800 million across the globe.
Although the film is not being shown in certain countries after it has been banned due to depictions of a same-sex relationship.
Lightyear has become a controversial topic in several Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, over a kissing scene in the movie.
Chris Evans, who voices the character in the movie, has since come out and slammed those who refuse to show the movie branding the powers behind the country’s “idiots”.
Speaking to Reuters he said: “The real truth is those people are idiots.
“There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before.
“I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward and embrace the growth that makes us human.
“It’s tough to not be a little frustrated that it even has to be a topic of discussion. The goal is that we can get to a point where it is the norm, and that this doesn’t have to be some uncharted waters, that eventually this is just the way it is.”
