Love Island is most complained about TV show of the year after 7,000 Ofcom complaints

ITV2’s hit reality dating show Love Island has officially been named the most complained about TV show in 2022, despite being only three-quarters of the way into the year.

The popular dating show tops this year’s fair share of TV blunders and controversies, with the majority of viewers opting to submit a complaint against the show.

This year’s edition of the show included an array of complaints being thrown at producers and islanders for poor behaviour and uninteresting content.

This series gained over 6,000 complaints in total, with the explosive ‘Movie Night’ episode racking in over 2,000 complaints alone due to the behaviour of the boys, specifically Luca Bish and Dami Hope who were later accused of bullying fellow islander Tasha Ghouri.

Viewers believed Tasha was being bullied by other islanders

Alleged misogyny led to 1,500 Ofcom complaints being filed by viewers who reportedly noticed misogynistic behaviour from the boys.

This also led to women’s aid charities speaking out about the alleged coercive control and bullying on the show.

Ofcom recently confirmed they would not be looking further into the complaints after “carefully assessing complaints about this series on a range of issues”.

From the spin-off show, Love Island: Aftersun, viewers sent in over 400 complaints when host Laura Whitmore and the panellists discussed winner Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu’s behaviour in Casa Amor with bombshell George Tasker.

This isn’t the Love Island’s first rodeo with Ofcom complaints. For the 2021 series, islander Faye Winter saw around 25,000 complaints lodged after her ‘toxic meltdown’ and uncomfortable row with partner Teddy Soares.

This year’s official count saw breakfast programmes Good Morning Britain and Jeremy Vine receive an equally unsettling number of complaints.

GMB landed 1,221 complaints with 855 of them being swept in after presenter Richard Madeley was accused of belittling the death threats made to Leader of the Opposition Sir Keir Starmer.

Jeremy Vine racked in 1,038 complaints with some in relation to a segment of misinformation surrounding the Covid-19 vaccination.
