Martin Lewis fights tears as failing to help struggling single mum leaves him 'shaking'

Martin Lewis was overcome with emotion during a heartbreaking interview with Lorraine Kelly on her ITV show as he demanded the government tackle the energy crisis.

During Monday’s instalment of the popular daytime show, the 49-year-old discussed the rise of the energy bill price cap after he choked back tears during his ITV Money Show last week.

The Money Saving Expert was tasked with advising residents up and down the country how to avoid the crippling influx in energy bills which plunged millions of homes into debt over the festive period.

After speaking with some of those greatly affected by the skyrocketing prices, the dad-of-one struggled to hold back the tears as he admit there were very few ways for viewers to avoid the price jump.

And it’s clear to see last week’s show continues to make the TV presenter emotional as he choked up when speaking about the nationwide problem with Lorraine.

Speaking on the show, he recalled the moment he realised he was unable to help those in need up and down the country.

He said: “It was a dawning realisation as I did the show. I sit there and do a lot of work on paper and a lot of numbers and you are realising exactly what it means.

“Talking to that viewer and realising that after 20 odd years of doing this and all the knowledge I have built up, that there is absolutely nothing left in my cupboard to be able to help her but moreso to be able to help millions more.

“Come this April, if we do not see intervention from the Government, or by Ofgem, there are millions of people who will be thrown into fuel poverty on the back of the changes that are coming – these astronomical, unaffordable changes to people’s bills.”

“During the middle of the show it just got a bit much,” he confessed. “The break came at the right time and I pulled myself together for the second half.”

He went on: “I came home afterwards and I did think, ‘It is just going to be very, very, very hard’.

“I need to try not to be too political but I just think political intervention is very much needed or we are walking into a catastrophe.

“It is not an exaggeration to say there are people who will be choosing between heating and eating this April.”

Lorraine continues weekdays from 9am on ITV.
