Kiefer Sutherland awkward blunder as he 'cut head off co-star' on set of iconic film

Hollywood icon Kiefer Sutherland accidently ‘cut the head off’ a model of his co-star Jason Patric on the set of The Lost Boys, in an awkward blunder before the pair met.

The story was revealed by Jason, who played Michael in the iconic 80s vampire film, during a Q&A panel at Comic Con Liverpool on April 1, 2023.

He and co-stars Jamison Newlander and Corey Feldman, who played Edgar and Alan Frog in the film, shared stories about the making of The Lost Boys and answered questions from fans as part of the panel.

When asked by one fan if it was true that Jason Patric accidently cut the head off a figurine of Kiefer Sutherland on top of a birthday cake on the Lost Boys set, Jason revealed it was actually the other way around.

“It was my birthday and I think for lunch, they made me a cake and had me on the motorcycle,” said Jason.

“I hadn’t met Kiefer yet – we were going to work together that night.

“They sang Happy Birthday and Kiefer came over and he took the knife to cut himself a piece, but he just cut my head off.”

It was just one of the many stories that the cast shared as part of the panel, including their hardest scenes to film and the moments they could not stop laughing on set – as well as paying tribute to their late co-star Corey Haim, who played Sam in the film.

Asked why the film is still so iconic after 36 years, Jason credited the cast and director Joel Schumacher with creating something “unique,” and explained why the success of The Lost Boys is so hard to copy.

“It’s really well made,” said Jason, adding: “It’s shot by a famous cinematographer named Michael Chapman who has since departed. He shot Raging Bull, he shot Taxi Driver. In 1986 you don’t get that guy making a teen vampire movie.

“Of course Joel Schumacher getting all these actors together and giving them all this freedom to create their characters.

He continued: “Since it hadn’t been done before a movie like that, everyday you were creating something, so now someone tries to copy certain things and it just doesn’t work. So there’s a unique blend of very talented people who put something together that was really unique.

“I will say Joel was great at hiring amazingly talented people and letting them do their thing. That mix made it great.

“I don’t think anyone thought it would basically become The Wizard of Oz of horror movies and everyone watches it twice a year – but I really do believe that it was Joel getting these very talented people.”
