Peter Andre not going shirtless in public again after suffering ‘psychological issues’

Peter Andre has revealed he “won’t be going shirtless” in the future having been left with “psychological issues” from fad dieting.

The 50-year-old, who shot to stardom in the 90s following the release of his hit single ‘Mysterious Girl’ admits he “built a rod for his own back” due to his sublime physique in the song’s video.

Now, the father-of-four says years of yo-yo dieting has affected his mental health, with one photo in particular triggering his insecurities.

Pete told OK! Magazine: “I was alone on a beach in the Bahamas, so I took my shirt off and went in the water. The sea was really rough and when I came out I remember I was gasping. There was some paparazzi photographer in the trees and he must have caught me breathing out.”

He continued: “The photo got sent all around the world and it was the first time people had seen me like that since the early days.

“People who were heavier than me might have thought, ‘But he looks alright’, but in my mind I looked like Brendan Fraser in The Whale.

“We never see what other people see. Now, I’ve got this psychological link to something and it’s stopping me just freely walking around the beach – I just won’t do it. It’s ridiculous.”

The star, who was married to ex Katie Price between 2005 and 2009 said the snap in question resulted in him starting “all the fad diets” such as low carbs and no fats leaving him “completely depressed” for “around five years”, such is his love of food.

With his anxiety ongoing, he has now written a book with nutritionist Ben Smith titled ‘It’s Fine’, in which he hopes to insprire others dealing with feelings of restriction and unhappiness whilst dieting.

Now in a healthier frame of mind, Pete says: “Instead of depriving myself and bingeing, I would actually treat myself every day. Doing it that way meant that earlier on in the day, I was making better choices because I knew what was coming.”
