Sex-crazed horror film is ‘worse than the Human Centipede’ as fans freak out

Horror fans have been left freaked out by a sex-crazed horror film they claim is “worse than the Human Centipede”.

That film is 1975 classic Shivers, directed by David Cronenberg. It follows the residents of a high-rise apartment block who all become infected with a parasite that turns them into sex fiends. The disease is passed on by the slightest sexual contact – and it soon ravages the whole block.

Even the film’s slogan is a dare for fans, teasing: “If you think you’re not afraid of the dark… if you feel nothing can shock you… if you say you don’t scare easily… if you believe you’ve seen everything… then see Shivers.”

As well as plenty of darkly raunchy scenes, the movie is also imbued with violence. In one scene, best friends Betts and Janine make out in the bath, before Betts passes a gross parasite onto her pal. Even a little girl becomes infected with the virus in a particularly sickening scene.

One critic at the time branded it “the most repulsive movie I’ve ever seen” and “crammed with blood, violence and depraved sex”. The criticism was so harsh that it allegedly got director Cronenberg kicked out of his apartment in Toronto, with his landlady citing a “morality clause”.

The movie even made it onto a list of “10 movies more disturbing than the Human Centipede”, sending fans into meltdown.

It’s not the only time Cronenberg has been unceremoniously evicted. While shooting his movie Rabid, the lady in charge of the house threw him out due to fears about filming “porn”. He told The Independent: “I didn’t ever want to be a tenant again after filming Rabid.

“I got kicked out of the apartment [we were filming in] by the old lady who owned the house, as the star Marilyn Chambers was also in porn and this woman, in her eighties, thought I was making pornographic films. But the sounds she thought she was hearing from my bathroom were me fixing the leaks in her tap!”

If you’re in the market for a truly disturbing watch, 2014 horror film Tusk might be one to watch after Shivers. It follows a podcaster who heads out to visit a recluse in his secluded home, and soon learns of his obsession with walruses.

Soon the poor victim is surgically transformed into one of the sea-dwelling creatures, complete with fleshy patches all over his body and bony tusks protruding from his lip. He’s kept chained up next to a pool of water and eventually begins to believe he truly is an animal.

After learning to ‘swim’ by being dragged into the water by his new tail, he has to live out the rest of his tragic life in a zoo, visited by his former girlfriend. To make matters worse, it’s inspired by a true story – an online prank advert supposedly from an old man offering a room rent-free with just one caveat: said tenant will have to occasionally dress as and act like a walrus.
