But in 2013 the singer suffered a stroke and was diagnosed with intestinal cancer three years later.

The hitmaker received a kidney transplant in 2017 but was still struggling with kidney disease and other illnesses before her death.

Her spokesperson said in a statement: “Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll’, has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland.”

Tina previously opened up about her horrific health battle, branding it a “silent killer” just months before her death.

Behind the scenes, the music icon had been battling high blood pressure as well as kidney failure with the help of her loyal husband Erwin Bach, 67 – who even donated a kidney to her.

But his donation wasn’t enough to ease her illness, after it was reported that Tina spent her last months feeling “nauseous and dizzy” while handling “multiple prescriptions” that left her “scared a lot”.

In her final months, the singer bravely shared her heartbreaking story of how she refused to take conventional medicine for her hypertension and put herself “at great danger” by turning to homeopathic cures.

She told Show your Kidneys Love at the time: “I considered my body an invaluable and indestructible bastion for way too long.”

The mum-of-three was diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure) in 1978 and battled with the disease for decades.

But the star admitted she “didn’t care much about it” until 1985 when she was put on daily medication to combat it.

It wasn’t until she suffered a stroke in 2009 because of her high blood pressure that she discovered her kidneys were suffering and had already lost 35 per cent of their function.

The star continued to take medication to control her blood pressure but soon became convinced that the pills she was using were making her worse.

She explained: “With time I developed a fatal dislike of these pills. I remembered relishing life before I started taking them and wished I could be as clear headed and energetic as I used to be.”

A close friend at the time suggested she could try a homeopathic doctor in France who quickly replaced all of her conventional medication with homeopathic remedies – without seeking advice from her doctors.

Tina’s uncontrolled high blood pressure caused havoc on her kidneys which caused her kidney disease to reach its final stage.

The Proud Mary singer confessed: “Rarely in my life had I been so wrong. Thanks to my naivety, I had ended up at the point where it was about life or death.”

Tina was put on dialysis for nine months in order to survive and recover from her lack of controlled medication.

She continued: “It was my only option, but it was depressing to be connected to a machine for hours.”

Luckily her husband Erwin offered to donate one of his kidneys and Tina underwent a successful kidney transplant in 2017.

But that wasn’t the end of Tina’s health struggles, after her body rejected the donor kidney which forced her to spend months in and out of hospital.

It was at this point that her health started to take a turn for the worse which she never fully recovered from.

Tina went on: “The months after the transplantation were marked by a never ending up and down.

“I kept feeling nauseous and dizzy, forgot things, and was scared a lot.”

Talking just weeks before her death, the singer revealed her health problems were “still not quite resolved”.

She added: “I am on multiple prescriptions and take great care to follow my doctors’ orders meticulously. For I know that I can trust them and their therapies.”

The singer told her doting fans: “Today is International World Kidney Day. Why is it important? Because kidneys fail without pain. And that’s why I’m telling you today: Show your kidneys love! They deserve it.”
