Superhero blockbuster The Marvels bursts onto the big screen this week – featuring a tough trio of heroines.
The movie stars Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan aka Ms Marvel.
The brand new adventure, a sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, sees them having to work out why they keeping swap places when they use their powers – as they team up to save the universe.
But whatever happened to the female superheroes of yesteryear?

Wonder Woman
Before Gal Gadot donned the iconic costume, American beauty Lynda Carter was ‘fighting for her rights’ in those ‘satin tights’ back in the 1970s TV series.
After the role of Diana Prince, the ex-Miss USA would battle alcoholism and marry twice, with her second hubby dying in 2021.
Now 72, the mum-of-two became a singer, has starred in TV movies and series like Hawkeye and had a cameo in Wonder Woman 1984.
Debra Winger, now 68, played Wonder Girl in the original TV series, before grabbing roles in movies like An Officer and a Gentleman.
Catwoman
Julie Newmar, the original Catwoman baddie from the 1960s Batman TV series is still going strong aged 90, but Santa Baby singer Eartha Kitt, who also took on the role in series, died in 2008 aged 81.
Michelle Pfeiffer wowed with her skintight catsuit in 1992’s Batman Returns.
The twice-married mum of two, now 65, recently took on the role of Janet van Dyne in the Marvel Universe.
In fact, some 30 actresses have played Catwoman, including stars Halle Berry and Anne Hathaway.
Batgirl
Librarian Barbara Gordon, turned crime-fighting sidekick of Batman, was first played by Yvonne Craig in the 1960s TV series.
As well as other TV and movie roles she later became an estate agent. Twice married, Craig died from breast cancer, aged 78, in 2015.
After finding fame in 1995 movie Clueless, Alicia Silverstone played Batgirl in 1997’s Batman & Robin alongside George Clooney.
Now 47, the vegan mum-of-one is divorced from rocker Christopher Jarecki and has had other TV and movie roles, but stepped back from Hollywood fame to concentrate on working for good causes.
Supergirl
In the 1984 movie Supergirl, following on from the Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve, Helen Slater played the title role.
She’d star in more flicks like 1991’s City Slickers and as Superman’s mother in the TV series Smallville, has had a role in a recent TV series of Supergirl, all while studying for a mythology PhD.
The 59-year-old has one daughter and has been married since 1989.
Bionic Woman
Lindsay Wagner played souped-up Jamie Somers, in the 1970s show, a spin-off from the Six Million Dollar Man.
She went on to star in movies like Nighthawks and TV’s Grey’s Anatomy.
Now 74, she has been married and divorced four times – including to Dempsey and Makepeace star Michael Brandon.
EastEnders star Michelle Ryan, now 39, took on the role in a 2007 remake and has since starred in shows like Doctor Who and Death in Paradise.
The Marvels opens in UK cinemas on November 10.
