BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty quickly moved on after she jokingly agreed that a Paralympian was “absolutely stupid.”
The BBC show returned to screens on Saturday (June 1) with Naga and Charlie Stayt back at the helm. And the pair were on hand to share the latest headlines from around the globe.
But things took an awkward turn when chatting to Chetan Pathak, who’s a regular face on the sports segment of the show. Chethan was discussing Paralympian Martin Perry who appeared in a clipplaying table tennis with no hands.

“Martin says playing table tennis with no hands is absolutely stupid, but he loves it and the life that it’s given him, so good luck to Martin at the Paralympics this summer,” Chetan blurted out.
Naga couldn’t believe her ears. She fired back: “He may be absolutely stupid, but he’s good at it! “.
Against all odds, Martin came across ping pong at 16 during a summer camp in Drumschapel. Set to fly the flag for Great Britain in Paris this year at the Paralympics, he spilled the beans to BBC Breakfast’s Sally Hurst that what kicked off as a bit of fun has now turned into an all-consuming passion that’s “taken over his life”.
“Choosing to play table tennis when you’ve got no hands is nothing short of absolutely stupid, but I have so much fun when I play,” he’d said. “I travel the world, it has given me a career, a purpose, and obviously the goal of getting to the Paralympic Games! “, reports the Express.
The BBC clip showed Martin heroically juggling daddy duties with his wee lass Beira, even though he’s got a tough time handling day-to-day stuff without hands. The disability hasn’t deterred him from forming a strong bond with his daughter, whom he shares with wife Siobhan, nor has it dampened his unyielding pursuit of his Olympic dream.
On this try, he’s finally made the cut and set to jet off to the French capital for the summer games. Speaking to BBC Sport, Siobhan previously revealed that her husband was incredibly “determined”, with buttoning up clothes and tying shoelaces being the only tasks out of his reach.
Furthermore, she stated his dedication to sport was such that, just three days post the birth of their child, he was back to his training regimen.
