Britney Spears tried to ‘steal’ iconic Atomic Kitten song – but band said ‘no way’

Natasha Hamilton claims Britney Spears tried to “take” Atomic Kitten’s chart-topping hit single from them.

The beloved girl group reached number one in the UK back in 2001 with their single Whole Again. But in an exclusive interview with Daily Star, the mum-of-five revealed that their first single was so good that other artists tried to poach it.

The 42-year-old songstress, who performed for Manchester’s Pride weekend, explained that the trio had to fend off the competition from the Pop Princess herself. She told us: “She wanted, or her team wanted Britney [Spears] to record it, but we said, ‘Absolutely not’.

“Obviously, that was our song and the thought of a massive US star coming along and taking it and kind of scarpering our chances of releasing it in the States as well. We didn’t want that to happen. So she never got her hands on it!”

The former Celebrity Big Brother star went on to reveal that the group did go across the pond to record more music for an American audience but their opportunity was abruptly cut short. Natasha added: “We did go to America and we did record an American version of it with a video.

“But then we were just about to release that and then September 11th happened and literally everything went to s**t. So it never came into fruition over in the States after that, it’s just one of them things.”

But Britney wasn’t the only hitmaker fighting them for a top spot in the charts. The auburn beauty explained how the group also worked with Australian beauty Kylie Minogue.

The doting mum went on: “She sent one of her catalogue songs to our record label who would be like, ‘Oh, this would be a great song for the girls.’ And when we heard it, it had her BV’s [backing vocals] on and they ended up staying on and being part of the Feel So Good album.

“Her song was called Feel So Good and the album was called Feel So Good. But it was just so nice to be singing an absolute icon’s song. Who wouldn’t want to do that?

“Whereas now, I’d have gone, ‘Let’s get in the studio and write a fresh song, Kylie.’ But things were different back then.” It comes after the hitmaker launched her debut single as a solo artist, titled Edge Of Us, with another EP called You Don’t Know Me set to drop on September 12.

Speaking about her performance on the Main Village Stage at Manchester Pride, the songstress gushed: “I did Manchester Pride years ago, like a long time ago, but it just hits different when you get to perform your own music. These are stories of my life, and I’m not just writing generic songs.

“My music has been about what I’ve been through and my experiences, so I’m so glad that everyone loves them.” She went on to reveal that her former bandmate Jenny Frost was watching on from the crowd.

Natasha added: “Jenny was in the pit today literally sobbing, I couldn’t even look at her at one point. She was so proud.” Fans will have to stay tuned to see what the musician will get up to next.
