Dark Disney princess theory will mean you’ll never watch films the same again

Most of us had a favourite Disney film growing up, and fans have been left stunned after only just discovering a ‘hidden meaning’ behind the personalities of princesses.

We immerse ourselves in Disney films, entering dreamlands filled with royalty, stunning ballgowns, vibrant colours, and magic that warms our hearts.

Despite the typical villain and character struggles, we always know there will be a happy ending. However, these stories also contain relatable and educational moments that aren’t as joyful.

A recent revelation suggests that each character’s personality represents different mental health disorders. This comes after Dr Joshua Yager, a psychologist, conducted a study on Disney films and noticed a common theme.

Podcast hosts Jana Rosenberg and Carter Kench of Allegedly Speaking recently went viral after discussing the “easter eggs” in Disney princesses’ personalities. In a clip of the podcast shared on TikTok, Jana said: “Did you know that every Disney princess represents some kind of mental disorder? ”

She continued: “Belle’s one is really insane and it’s like how did we not catch on earlier. Belle was captured and put into a castle and then she falls in love with her capturer.”

Belle is believed to have Stockholm Syndrome, “when you get taken and then you fall in love with the person that takes you,” added Jana, reports the Mirror.

The podcast host also suggested that Alice from Alice in Wonderland suffers from schizophrenia. Jana stated: “She sees all these caterpillars walking around with eyes, other animals.”

Fans of The Little Mermaid might recall Ariel’s line, “I’ve got gadgets and gismos a plenty”, as she swims amongst her collection of human artefacts.

Jana observed: “She had so much stuff around her all the time that she never throws away, so she’s a hoarder.”

One viewer commented on the video clip, suggesting that “Ariel also has body dysmorphia,” The beloved Frozen characters Anna and Elsa were also said to have hidden mental disorders. The podcaster remarked: “Their characters go from warm to cold, they’re very reckless – this is bipolar.”

Co-host Carter agreed, saying: “I actually do see that yeah,” One TikTok user commented: “I understood every single one,” while another wrote: “No wonder Frozen has been my favourite movie since I was 13, wrote another. One other said: ” Another viewer shared: “Now I understand why I adore all characters and Disney princesses. We do have something in common.” Another agreed, stating: “Makes so much sense.”

Dr Yager’s study also noted that The Lion King’s Scar and Aladdin’s Jafar both exhibit antisocial personality disorder.

Snow White displays behaviours indicative of OCD “through her meticulous attention to cleanliness and order,” the psychologist explained. Additionally, Winnie the Pooh’s Piglet is portrayed as having anxiety, often seen worrying about minor things.
