Haliey Welch has shared how she feels about the infamous nickname that made her a viral sensation.
It feels like forever since Welch first filled our social media newsfeeds after a casual comment during a street interview saw her going global. In fact it was only June when she was chatting to Tim & Dee TV, and delivered the line which launched a million memes.
Welch was asked: “What’s one move in bed that makes a man go crazy every time? That you do.” With a smile on her face, and in her strong Southern accent, she uttered: “Oh, you gotta give him that ‘hawk tuah’ and spit on that thang.”

From that point on she became famous for the onomatopoeia she used during her response, and became known as the Hawk Tuah girl before anyone knew her name.
Fast forward just a few months and the Tennessee native is everywhere, but for different reasons.
The world’s media follows her movements like a hawk – excuse the pun – as she flits from one prestigious event to another, to rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest celebrities.
But the 22-year-old social media star, who had one of the fastest growing accounts when she signed up to Instagram, opened up about the name that made her during Tuesday’s appearance on the dating show West Date Ever.
“We’re trying to step away from it,” she admitted to host and Summer House star West Wilson. “I’d rather just be known by my first name, not Ms Hawk.”
Even though she wants to move away from the moniker, Welch is still keen to take advantage of her new fame. “We’re steering towards podcasts and stuff like that,” she explained. “And a reality TV show, we’ve talked about it.”
In another interview, Wilson expressed his desire to support Haliey in leaving the ‘Hawk Tuah’ nickname behind. “She got thrown into the spotlight almost against her will, so I wanted to make sure she knew I wasn’t there to beat her viral meme over everyone’s heads,” he told Page Six.
“Everyone has a story and I wanted to get to know more about her and help her leave ‘Hawk Tuah’ in the past.”
In July, Welch applied to trademark her catchphrase. She created her own company, 16 Minutes LLC, and applied for full rights to use her line on items like hats and T-shirts.
