Lily Allen has caused a stir by admitting she’s travelled in a first-class seat while her 12-year old daughter has been left in the economy section of their flight.
The Smile singer dropped the bombshell during a chat with her old mate Miquita Oliver on their BBC podcast, Miss Me? Lily opened up about jetting back to England for Miquita’s 40th birthday bash and bringing along her eldest, Ethel, whom she sat apart from.
Lily, 38, told Miquita, who’s gearing up for her milestone birthday this Thursday: “We are flying to London today to come and see you for your birthday. I’m going in first class, she’s going in economy.”

Miquita quipped back, asking: “You know what that is? ” as Lily cheekily responded: “Selfish? ” The conversation then took a nostalgic turn as Miquita remarked: “The circle of life. That baby is now coming to London because you live in New York for my 40th birthday, which we are having at the end of the road we grew up on.”
Lily then touched on a hot topic, saying: “There’s a trend at the moment on social media of people defiantly saying that they won’t give up their seats for children on aeroplanes,” reports the Mirror. Miquita responded: “Fair enough. Why would you give your seat to a kid if you payed for it? It’s not like a train.”
But Lily wasn’t just about stirring the pot; she also pointed out that passengers should consider families split up by seating arrangements, adding: “Quite often when you’re a big group the airline will separate the seats.”
She continued: “You’ll get to the airport and they’ll tell you your child is sat [away from you] and so when you get on the plane you have to ask people if they don’t mind moving so you can sit next to your children. Obviously it’s inconvenient for everybody involved but I find it fascinating that it’s now become something that gives you clout on social media when you’re like, ‘A mum came up to me and asked me to move and I told them to f**k off.’ Is this what we’ve become? Well done, you’ve made a family sit apart from each other.”
In her discussion, Lily highlighted that not all families have the luxury of reserving seats ahead of time and urged individuals to be “a bit nicer”. Taking a humorous jab at herself, she remarked: “Says me who’s putting myself in first class while my child is alone in the back of the plane. I don’t want to sit with my kid.”
Lily shares two daughters, Ethel Mary and 11-year old Marnie Rose with her ex-husband Sam Cooper. She experienced a series of heart-shattering ordeals ranging from a 2008 miscarriage with former partner Ed Simons, to the stillbirth of her baby boy George, in November 2010.
The premature birth of son George resulted from a viral infection Lily had contracted six months into her pregnancy. In a cheerful turn of events, she tied the knot again in 2020 with Stranger Things actor David Harbour. Opening up about her struggle to cope with George’s tragic demise on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, she confessed: “I don’t think I did – I don’t think I ever will, really,”. “I went into trauma and I don’t think I’ll ever really recover from that.”
