Rylan Clark has delved into the psychological repercussions of his portrayal as a “joke act” during his 2012 stint on The X Factor.
Despite achieving success in his TV and radio careers, landing shows on most of the major channels since then, Rylan revealed he still dreads being asked to sing. In a sneak peek of one of the episodes in BBC Two’s Rob and Rylan’s Grand Tour, Rylan, 35, confessed: “Every week I was thrown into the lion’s den doing stuff that I didn’t know.”
He further explained this distressing effect: “It’s like an internal thing now. Once you’ve been through that, when someone goes, ‘Go on, just do it’, it makes me go, ‘I can’t, I can’t just go and do it’.”

Disclosing his journey towards self-realisation, Rylan commented: “I feel like I’ve worked so hard to move away from that ‘f****** idiot’ that I was perceived as, that character who couldn’t sing.” He then solemnly declared that such situations could “f*** someone up majorly”.
In an episode of Grand Tour, set to air on Sunday (May 26), Rylan is challenged by co-host Rob Rinder to showcase his singing abilities – a request that resurfaced painful X-Factor memories. Reflecting on his early media days, Rylan admitted: “My job on X Factor wasn’t to be the singer, so I played that role.
“My job was to be the joke act, the one everyone would speak about and be on the front page of the paper every day.”
Fortunately, his road trip adventure series alongside pal Rob has injected newfound confidence in him and reinforced his belief that he encompasses more than just being a punchline in a singing contest.
In conclusion, Rylan asserted: “If I’ve learned anything on this Grand Tour, it is that there’s more to me than that. I’m not thick, I’ve got more to give than just being that idiot on the telly with the shiny teeth.”
