Sinead O’Connor fans blast ‘horrific’ waxwork unveiled next to Star Wars figures

Fans of Sinead O’Connor have slammed a “horrific” waxwork freshly unveiled to the public.

The Irish singer-songwriter, best known for her cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” tragically passed away on July 26 last year aged just 56. Her death sent shockwaves around the music world as people came together to remember the troubled songstress.

Sinéad had been going through a rough patch following the death of her son Shane in January 2022. Following his death, Sinéad’s final album, No Veterans Die Alone was postponed indefinitely and her concert tour was cancelled.

As a mark of respect to her legacy and what she gave to the Irish music scene, the country banded together to support and remember Sinéad. This culminated in a custom-made waxwork of the star being sculpted, to be displayed at the National Wax Museum in Dublin.

The waxwork was unveiled on Thursday morning (July 25) with a touching speech being made by the museum’s owner and good pal of O’Connor, Paddy Dunning. He went on to unfurl the curtain hiding the figure, which included a dedicated mark to remember the unveiling on the one-year anniversary of her death.

Mr Dunning said: “We didn’t put her with this great big smile, we put her as a serious artist in this period time of Nothing Compares 2 U, which was an emotional video. I think it touched everyone’s heart.

“The head is amazing, the eyebrows, the lips, the hands are pretty amazing.” However, during the course of the unveiling, some fans were left bemused at the finished piece, with many blasting the waxwork for its lack of similarity to the singer.

One furious fan raced to social media to comment underneath a video of the reveal to let their feelings be known. “Maybe its just a bad angle on the video, but that looks like a very poor likeness,” the account typed. “Looks more like a shop window mannequin.”

A second user agreed, adding: “Absolutely horrific. That could be anyone – Sinead had a beauty about her.” A third user piled onto the criticism, fuming: “Doesn’t even resemble her, looks like a mannequin taken from Arnott’s shop window,” referencing the famed Dublin department store.

Other fans were more bemused at the placement of the waxwork amongst its contemporaries, as the statue was unveiled next to a group of Star Wars characters. One eagle-eyed fan spotted that Sinéad had placed next to the interstellar science fiction greats.

This left them equally confused, asking: “And she’s next to Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Vader because….??????” A number of people from O’Connor’s past came to watch the unveiling of the waxwork, including ex-husband John Reynolds.

The pair were married in March of 1989, but called time on their relationship after just two years together.
