Steve Carrell ‘almost lost a nipple’ during horror incident covered in blood

Steve Carrell almost lost a nipple.

The Hollywood actor spoke to Heart about his time filming the cult classic film The 40 Year Old Virgin and explained that an untrained “waxing artist” nearly took it off while the cameras were rolling.

In the flick, a very famous scene shows Steve’s character Andy getting his chest waxed. While chatting to Heart, Carrell recalled the painful moment: “Maybe you can cut this out if you need to, but I almost lost a nipple. That waxing scene on The 40 Year Old Virgin, one take. For real. You can see blood! The pores were ripped open and you can really, you can really judge it by the way the other people in the scene are reacting.”

According to Steve, the woman who performed the wax had no experience whatsoever: “They are freaking out that it’s actually happening in front of them and the woman who did it, [she] had on her resume that she was a professional waxing artist – and she’d never done it before!”

Directed by Judd Apatow, the summary reads: “40-year-old Andy Sitzer, who works at a big-box store, is a virgin and deals with female customers awkwardly. Things become interesting when a romance develops between him and Trish, an entrepreneur.”

According to reports, it was Carrell’s role in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy back in 2004 which first caught Apatow’s eye. The director then wrote The 40 Year Old Virgin alongside The Office star, which later became his feature directorial debut.

Steve won awards from the Golden Shmoes and MTV Movie and TV Awards, while his co-star Catherine Keener – who plays Andy’s love interest – won awards from the Boston Society of Film Critics and Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
