Newcomer Olly Rhodes admitted that he has changed his sleeping routine to bet embody his character, Billy Savage. He told us: “I can’t give too much away, but my character goes through an emotional journey this year.
“So to prepare for that, I’d go to bed a little bit later, not too late – I’m not that unprofessional – just delay bed time for an hour or two so that I’m a little bit tired the next day.” but that’s not the only technique he uses to get into character.
He went on to add that he built a playlist to get into the mindset of his character. The actor went on: “I’ve got a playlist that I listen to and I’ll just sort of shut myself away for an hour or two before we start filming.
“It gets you focused, gets you in the headspace.” Meanwhile his co-star Tillie Amartey – who plays Stacey Neville on the show – admitted she can’t get into character when she applies her signature lip gloss.
She explained: “I say when I do put my lip gloss on I do feel a bit more pumped up and ready to go, like, ‘Okay I’m Stacey now’. Sometimes I will have a lollipop as well – but I’ve had to stop now because I’m getting rotten teeth.”
The cast went on to reveal some of the pieces they have stolen from the star-studded set. Noel McManus star Liam Scholes admitted that he is one of the show’s biggest thieves, pocketing “10 ties” from set over the years.
But that’s not all. He chuckled: “I’ve got all my character jackets. I’ve had a different jacket every season although I don’t know why because I’m never gonna wear them out of set.”
He isn’t the only actor who has their eyes on several wardrobe essentials. Tilly – who is Mel B’s niece – added that she is hoping to take home a pair of her character’s iconic trainers.
She added: “Eventually, I want to take my trainers because they’re quite Stacey and iconic. And everyone wants them!
“Everybody asks me where did you get those trainers from? So that and one of my many Belcher bracelets.” All eight episodes of series 14 of Waterloo Road will be available on BBC iPlayer from 6am on September 10.
