Cher has released a message after the sad news of Val Kilmer’s death – the 78-year-old singer has shared a heartbreaking tribute to the Top Gun star after he died on 1 April
Cher has paid tribute to ex-boyfriend Val Kilmer.
News of the Top Gun actor’s death recently hit the headlines after it was announced that he died on 1 April.
78-year-old Cher expressed her deep admiration for Kilmer, acknowledging his influence on her life and their enduring connection, reports the Express. The actress and songstress shared her heartfelt tribute: “VALUS Will miss u.”
“U Were funny, crazy, pain in the a*s, GREAT FRIEND, kids [love] U. BRILLIANT as Mark Twain, BRAVE here during ur sickness.”
Cher and Val dated for two years after meeting at the singer’s birthday celebrations, eventually calling things off in 1984.
Kilmer was just 23 while Cher was 36 when their paths crossed. Even after they called it quits, the ex-lovers kept up a profound mutual admiration.
In the years before his death, the star battled a slew of health woes that took a toll on his life and acting pursuits. Diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, the illness changed how he communicated and robbed him of his voice.
The illness also forced him to depend on a feeding tube for sustenance. The gifted actor underwent a gruelling treatment plan, which included chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgical procedures to manage his symptoms and fight the disease.
Despite these rigorous efforts, his condition required a tracheostomy in 2015. This surgical operation involved creating a stoma, an opening in his neck that connected directly to his windpipe, enabling him to breathe more comfortably by inserting a tube through this opening.
In his 2020 memoir I’m Your Huckleberry, Kilmer shared a harrowing experience during his stay at the guest house of music legend Cher, who had invited him over as his health deteriorated.
He recounted: “One night, I suddenly awoke vomiting blood that covered the bed like a scene out of The Godfather.” He immediately prayed and dialled 911 before informing his hostess.
“Then, I alerted my hostess. Cher stepped in and stepped up,” he wrote, adding that despite the chaos, she managed to bring a smile to his face.
Kilmer amusingly noted: “And yet even in my grave condition, I saw her scanning the paramedic, who was Gregory Peck drop-dead handsome. Only in Hollywood, right? Despite the fact that I was covered in blood, I caught her eye and bounced my brows like Groucho Marx. Hubba hubba.”
