Barry Manilow shares health update from hospital bed after lung cancer surgery

The 82-year-old singer says he is “better today” after having surgery to remove a cancerous spot from his lung, with no chemotherapy needed

Barry Manilow has provided a health update from his hospital bed following surgery to remove part of his lung.

The 82-year-old singer disclosed last month that he was facing major surgery after doctors discovered a “cancerous spot”.

Offering fans a peek into his recovery journey, Barry shared that he was “better today” in his social media caption.

Tour vocalist Melanie Taylor was amongst those responding to his update, penning: “That’s my boss y’all! He’s making it through the rain! Love you B! [prayer emojis]”.

The Copacabana legend had revealed his lung cancer diagnosis whilst announcing the cancellation of his forthcoming shows, reports the Mirror.

Taking to Instagram, Barry said: “As many of you know I recently went through six weeks of bronchitis followed by a relapse of another five weeks.

“Even though I was over the bronchitis and back on stage at the Westgate Las Vegas, my wonderful doctor ordered an MRI just to make sure that everything was OK.

“The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed. It’s pure luck (and a great doctor) that I.T. was found so early. That’s the good news.

“The bad news is that now that the Christmas Gift Of Love concerts are over I’m going into surgery to have the spot removed.”

Nevertheless, Barry clarified that medics don’t believe the cancer has spread, meaning he’s unlikely to need chemotherapy or radiotherapy after the procedure. He further stated: “The doctors do not believe it has spread and I’m taking tests to confirm their diagnosis. So that’s it. No chemo. No radiation. Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns.”

Barry will require a month for recovery post-surgery, leading to the cancellation of his scheduled US performances in January.
