BBC Breakfast guest breaks down in tears as presenter shares sad update

Dawn from Crosby Wombles became emotional on BBC Breakfast as presenter Jayne McCubbin shared her story of loss and community support after her husband’s death

BBC Breakfast viewers were moved on Monday’s show when a guest broke down in tears while sharing some heartbreaking news.

Presenters Jon Kay and Emma Vardy introduced a new weekly segment to the programme, titled Rise and Shine. The Rise and Shine feature, aired once a week, honours the inspiring work of individuals and community groups across the UK. In this week’s episode, BBC Breakfast highlighted the commendable efforts of a litter-picking group named Crosby Wombles, with presenter Jayne McCubbin meeting the devoted volunteers.

After hearing from several members about how the Crosby Wombles has positively influenced their lives, Jayne said: “For magic like this to happen, there has to be a person who pulls it all together, and that person is Dawn.”, as reported by the Express, reports the Mirror.

Jayne went on to say: “When Dawn helped set this group up back in 2022, she had a lovely husband by her side” – introducing him as Adrian.

In a heart-wrenching moment, Jayne revealed: “Last summer, he unexpectedly died and Dawn unexpectedly came to rely on this little litter-picking group in ways she’d never imagined.”

Upon seeing a photograph of her late husband, a tearful Dawn shared: “This community has been so supportive, incredibly supportive. There’s many stories shared in a safe environment, and people go away better for sharing.”

Jayne then commended Dawn, declaring: “Well done, you. Well done. You would have been lost without the work you’re doing” to which a tearful Dawn admitted: “Completely!”.

Dawn continued: “As Jo’s just said to me now, Adrian would be so proud, and I really do feel that.”

Paying tribute to Dawn, Jayne announced to the gathering: “Doesn’t she do a brilliant job?” This prompted Dawn to break down as everyone erupted in applause.

Jayne went on: “From litter to love and life-affirming friendships which make a place truly home.”

Wrapping up the piece, Jayne declared: “Doesn’t she make a difference? These are the kinds of stories we would love to champion on Breakfast in 2026, please do get in touch” leaving an emotional and overwhelmed Dawn to step away amid the outpouring of admiration.

Back in the studio, presenter Emma observed: “Oh, so nice. We need a bit of this in the middle of our news bulletins, don’t we?”
