Beloved comedian ‘found dead inside home’ as famous pal leads tributes

A stand-up comedian has sadly died.

The former Fox funnyman John Mulrooney was reportedly found dead inside his Coxsackie, New York home aged 67 on 29 December.

He was best known for hosting Fox’s The Late Show in 1987 after Joan Rivers was sacked, hosting Comic Strip Live throughout the 90s and Great Balls of Fire in 1989. He also previously appeared on HBO, A&E and Comedy Central, filled in as a guest host on The Pat Sajak Show and appeared on Ellen.

John also starred in The Good Life, Ryder P.I. and Star Search, where he later joined as a writer.

His family posted an obituary that read: “John Mulrooney was a beloved stand-up comedian, dedicated public servant and proud patriot whose life was defined by service, laughter and an unwavering devotion to the people he loved.”

John appeared on a number of TV shows throughout his career

John’s loved ones said that he “performed multiple times for U.S. service members overseas, participating in USO tours throughout the Middle East during the Global War on Terror.”

“Those performances were among his proudest moments, allowing him to give back to the men and women serving far from home and to bring moments of laughter and relief in challenging environments.”

Andrew Dice Clay led tributes toward the “great comedian”

They continued to pay tribute to John, stating that he “spent his post-Hollywood years co-hosting popular morning shows, was a recreational pilot and had a joy for living”.

Throughout 2010 to 2024, John “chose a second path of service” and became a police officer. He performed for police and fire department fundraisers “across the country”.

Comedian Andrew Dice Clay took to Facebook to brand John a “great, great comedian”.
