Coronation Street and Emmerdale crossover episode Corriedale features public vote closing 15 minutes before Monday’s 8pm transmission with four character pairings including Roy, Kirk, Carla and Ross
Soap supremo Iain MacLeod is certainly battling the jitters ahead of Coronation Street and Emmerdale’s massive crossover spectacular, Corriedale. Monday night (January 5) will witness the soap universes merge in a thrilling hour-long instalment.
Stars from both programmes will appear in the adrenaline-fuelled episode, featuring a catastrophic crash stunt that puts multiple lives in jeopardy. However, one particular aspect of the episode has been causing Iain restless nights.
The public voting component, as previously announced, will allow viewers the opportunity to incorporate a scene into the programme. The exact timing of its broadcast remains under wraps, but voting will conclude 15 minutes before the episode begins at 8PM on Monday.
The selection has been whittled down to four pairings, each featuring one character from both soaps. At a crucial moment, audiences will be invited to choose which duo’s storyline they wish to witness, though Iain revealed to The Mirror and other media outlets that ideally, eventually, all scenes could be shown.
Just one will be inserted into the episode at the eleventh hour, reports the Mirror. It’s this lightning-fast incorporation and the minimal preparation time available that’s causing Iain considerable anxiety.
He confessed: “Based on a long list of viewer suggestions of four pairings that we and viewers liked sound of, we wrote a scene of each of those four pairings. Starting in January there will be an online poll and you can vote for which of those four pairings you would like to see in the finished episode.
“There’ll be an additional scene in there that will be chosen by the audience. Voting closes 15 minutes before transmission.
“I will be in the transmission suite on the night going, ‘play that one. Hopefully that’s the right one,’ and I’m already feeling a little sweaty about that to be honest.”
When questioned about the timing within the episode and the character combinations, he revealed: “We designed it so that there’s a juncture where it can feature and I’m not telling you where it is at this point. The pairings are, Roy and Nicola, Cafe Supremos the pair of them, we have Kirk and Sam, which actor James Houghton described as the meeting of two brain cells.
“We have Carla and Charity which certainly there’ll be a lot of noise around that if that ends up being the one that is successful, and then there’s Ross and Tracy which is very sparky. It’s two appallingly flirtatious people unable to avoid flirting with each other.
“So they’re all individually brilliant scenes. They’re in the camera, they’re ready to go.
“We’ll find some avenue for you to see all of them at some point, I’m sure. But in terms of what goes in the episode, that will be up to the audience.”
