Married At First Sight UK star opens up on 'series first' ahead of 2022 show launch

Married At First Sight star Mel Schilling has addressed a big ‘series first’ ahead of the 2022 show launch.

The dating expert will return for the second run of the rebooted E4 series, which kicks off on Monday.

Last year’s episodes welcomed the UK show’s first ever same-sex couple, Matthew Jameson and Daniel McKee.

The pair remains one of only two couples from last year’s series who are still married and this year, two gay couples will feature for the first time in Married At First Sight history.

With the addition of the UK show’s first lesbian couple, Mel has praised Married at First Sight for leading the way in queer representation.

She told Digital Spy: “We are representing.

“We have a gay couple and a lesbian couple this year, and that’s never been done before in the history of MAFS.

“I think that is on the back of the success of Dan and Matt last year.

“Not only were they a great couple, and they were successful, and they’re still together, but they did such a good job of representing a healthy, normal, gay relationship.”

Mel added that she felt the addition of another same-sex pairing was ‘important to show’, explaining: “Not play to stereotypes, but just show normal human beings having a loving relationship.

“So we get to do that times two this year!”

A cast of 16 singletons will appear in the new series of Married At First Sight UK in the hope of finding true love.

With a One Year On reunion show for last year’s participants also set to air, 2021 star Bob Voysey teased on the Recapped at First Sight podcast: “There’s a reunion show from last year’s cast coming up.

“Lots of goss bound to be coming up on that one.

“Let’s just say it’s interesting and the dynamic was a lot different to how I thought it was going to be.”

Married At First Sight returns at 9 pm on Monday, August 29 on E4.
