BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty opens up on health battle and says ‘it’s really bad’

Naga Munchetty has revealed she was branded an “idiot” by her producer after she forgot to reorder a vital EpiPen for her Birch Oral Syndrome.

Chatting about allergies on air, the 49 year old broadcaster shared with her audience that her own allergy is linked to hay fever, which doctors say is becoming more prevalent.

Naga confessed that securing a new prescription for an EpiPen can be “quite difficult” if you haven’t had a recent allergic episode, leading her to delay updating her own supply.

According to the official guidelines, these auto-injectors are crucial for immediate treatment of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) caused by various triggers, including insect stings or bites, foods, drugs, and other allergens, as well as unexplained or exercise-induced anaphylaxis.

During the show, Naga caught up with Palina, a guest with a serious nut allergy, who recounted a terrifying experience in Thailand where she struggled to breathe after eating the wrong dish. She emphasized the lifesaving importance of carrying an EpiPen at all times, reports the Express.

Palina also discussed how she copes with her allergy on a daily basis, saying: “I’ve got quite good with checking packets and all these sorts of things, so for me, I can manage it well.”

“But, it’s always making sure I’ve got my EpiPens wherever I’m going. I take the same bag with my EpiPens in.”

“It’s making sure that’s always on hand, and I think that’s the most important thing for people with allergies, more severe allergies, is to have your EpiPens, because in most places it can be really life-saving to have that initial adrenaline before an ambulance gets there.”

They added: “For me, in my case, if I hadn’t had my EpiPens with me at the Thai restaurant, it would’ve been a lot more serious.”

But the presenter confessed: “I can’t say I always do it myself,” They went on: “I know, and it’s really bad, there are things like getting them re-prescribed because they go out of date and feeling like you’re taking something that you don’t use, even though you need it.”

Palina and said it had taken them months to get a new prescription, despite having a severe allergy.

The presenter replied: “I had the same thing.”

They admitted sheepishly: “I’ve got to make another call because I was talking to my producer and he said, ‘You’re an idiot, go and order your EpiPen’, and he’s kind of right.”

But they added: “But, it takes time doesn’t it? And getting a re-prescription for it can be quite diffiult for an Epipen if you haven’t had an incident in recent times.”
