Singer Lulu has has opened up about her battle with alcohol and confessed she was struggling for years but wanted to keep the addiction private until she understood it more19:59, 05 Sep 2025Updated 19:59, 05 Sep 2025Lulu has admitted she is an alcoholic(Image: Getty Images for Disney)Lulu has admitted she is an alcoholic. The Shout! singer and Eurovision winner has opened up about her alcohol addiction for the first time. She said she was a “secret drinker” and wanted to keep it private until she had the “language to understand it”.She felt “terrified” of ending up like her late dad Eddie, who she revealed was once “dragged away by the police”. The pop star explained how she wanted to be “the best Lulu” at all times, which was heightened as she shot to fame.Despite all of her success, Lulu was struggling for years and turned to memoirs and self help books to try to understand her battle. She said her alcoholism got worse as she got older, particularly when her son Jordan Frieda, 48, left home.Lulu has revealed she is a recovering alcoholic in a candid admission(Image: Getty Images)”For me, it had been controllable until I got into my sixties,” Lulu told The Times. “After I became menopausal, with both my parents gone, the empty nest, looking around and seeing all the young kids in the music industry, I became more and more reliant on it and so it just got worse.”She added: “For many years, and I can’t say how many, I had not been happy with the way I felt, not at all happy and [yet] unable to ask for help.” Lulu devastatingly shared scarring childhood memories of domestic violence between her parents.”It’s a family illness. The gene is there,” she said. Lulu decided to keep quiet about what she witnessed at home as she feared her parents would be seen as “bad people”.She now feels better than ever after seeking help for her addiction(Image: Getty Images)Lulu believes they were “damaged” but still carry shame about their actions. Lulu said her alcoholism was “the culmination of a life spent trying to suppress feelings,” and maintaining her public image. However, Lulu says she has now “never been happier in life” after seeking help for her health issue. “I finally understood it’s an illness that messes with everything,” she said.”So I know it sounds perverse, but I’m glad I’m an alcoholic and that I’m in recovery.” She says she is now in a “brighter” world with her cockapoo in central London. In May, Lulu opened up about mental health as she launched her own charity, Lulu’s Mental Health Trust. She told the Mirror: “The process of writing my memoir opened my eyes to the role that mental health has played in my life. Whether that’s my own mental health, my loved ones, colleagues, whatever.”When I was first coming into the industry we didn’t talk about it! But it’s so important, and I want to give back. People will understand what I mean when they read the book I think… it’s coming soon.”Lulu has been married twice, having wed Maurice Gibb from 1969 to 1973 and John Frieda from 1977 to 1991. She shot to fame at the age of 15 with her version of the Isley Brothers’ song Shout – credited to Lulu & the Luvvers.Article continues belowHave you joined Threads? TV presenter Jonathan Ross has been married to screenwriter Jane Goldman for 35 years and the couple share three children together – but there was a ‘nightmare’ decision he made before their wedding18:00, 05 Sep 2025Jonathan Ross left daughter Honey shocked with a decision he made before his marriage(Image: Dave J Hogan via Getty Images)Jonathan Ross left his daughter Honey stunned with a “nightmare” choice he made ahead of tying the knot with wife Jane. The chat show host first encountered screenwriter Jane back in 1986 at a promotional event for his programme The Last Resort.Jane later invited him to another event in the hope she would get chance to meet him again. Their relationship blossomed and the pair married two years later in Las Vegas. The couple now have daughters Honey and Betty, plus son Harvey. During his Reel Talk podcast with Honey, Jonathan revealed details about a disastrous moment from his stag celebration. When quizzed about the occasion, Jonathan confessed: “Mine was really misguided, the whole thing, I don’t even want to talk about it to be frank. I was with my friend from childhood who wasn’t really my friend anymore, but I felt I should invite him. Jane had a friend with her who she had since childhood who wasn’t really a friend anymore.”We had Jane’s mum and dad who were on the verge of splitting up, we had my mum and dad who had just split up, because we did it out of the country.”Jonathan and Jane met in the 1980s(Image: Dave Benett via Getty Images)Honey exclaimed: “Oh my God, you invited them even though they were recently divorced? That’s a nightmare guest list.”Jonathan continued: “That night I went out with Jane’s dad, who I didn’t know that well at the time, my dad, who was fine, and this friend of mine that I haven’t seen for years. It was just like, ‘Why are we four people who never normally hang out together…'”So I didn’t do a party party, but I don’t think I wanted to anyway. I was too interested in getting married.”Honey described her father’s stag-do as a “classy” affair, though Jonathan confessed it was an “uncomfortable evening”.Jonathan and Jane share three children together(Image: Eric Charbonneau, Getty Images)Jane, whose film credits include Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class, and Kick Ass, was merely 16 and beginning her journalism career when she first encountered Jonathan. Despite the decade separating their ages, the pair found common ground through their shared passion for science fiction, horror movies and American popular culture. In a 2012 interview with the Times, Jane recalled: “I met Jonathan at some sort of promotional event. He’d just started his show The Last Resort. He’d only been doing it for two weeks, I think.”I can’t remember what we talked about. I wish I could.”I think I invited him to some other thing, hoping to see him again. Maybe I was less socially awkward back then.”Jonathan addressed their significant age difference during a 2015 appearance on Loose Women, revealing: “When we first got together, she was very young… I wasn’t that old but I was considerably older and she came straight from home with her parents.”And I think the relationship carried on, I was sort of a parent figure as well as a husband,” he acknowledged.Jonathan returns to television tonight on The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice at 8pm on Channel 4, where he’ll join Josie Gibson in discussing Bake Off alongside Jo Brand and Tom Allen.Article continues below More

Amanda Holden’s explains why husband is barely seen after he rules out vow renewal

Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden has been married to Chris Hughes for 15 years, and the couple have two daughters together15:37, 05 Sep 2025Amanda Holden has explained why Chris Hughes is barely seen(Image: Tim Stewart News Limited)Amanda Holden has firmly dismissed the possibility of renewing her wedding vows with husband Chris Hughes. Amanda, 54, first met Chris at a bash in Los Angeles back in 2003.Romance blossomed a year later, and the couple tied the knot in 2008. Their nuptials featured a winter-themed celebration at the posh Babington House in Somerset, following their ceremony at the nearby St Margaret’s Church. The duo are now proud parents to daughters Lexi, 19, and Hollie, 13, reports the Mirror. During her Heart breakfast show, Amanda disclosed that she’d floated the idea of renewing their vows to Chris, but he wasn’t exactly thrilled by the prospect.Amanda explained: “We celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary in 2018 and I wore a long, white slip-dress and I suggested to Chris we do that but he said, ‘I hated doing that the first time’.”When Jamie quipped that Amanda’s other half was quite the “old romantic”, she responded: “He gets so embarrassed being the centre of attention. Over the summer holidays you might see two pictures of my husband.”Amanda and Chris at Wimbledon in 2016(Image: Karwai Tang/WireImage via Getty Images)She continued: “He doesn’t go to the red carpets, he doesn’t do anything with me, he hates attention. I get asked by newspapers at least twice a year if I’m still married, so no to the renewals.”Amanda, who commands an enormous social media presence, has previously admitted she forces Chris to pose for Instagram snaps.Nevertheless, she confesses she does heed her husband’s advice when it comes to business matters. In a chat with The Times, she revealed: “It does still feel fresh. We’re very different people. He can’t stand the limelight, hates red carpets, hates turning up anywhere with me, so he doesn’t.Amanda says Chris poses twice a year(Image: INSTAGRAM)”Twice a year he gets forced to go on my Instagram just to prove he exists. I will only listen to him on the business side of life. In other ways I’m very spontaneous and don’t listen to him at all.”Amanda has previously spoken about how their “ever-evolving” relationship helps them to keep their marriage fresh. She told Hello!: “We have ups and downs like everyone else.”But when I was looking at the pain and suffering that some of the people we were working with were going through, I felt so grateful that I had somebody in my life with no complications. My husband and I always have this joke where we go: ‘God, our relationship still feels so fresh.'”.”Twenty-two years does feel like a long time, but it still feels new to me. I think that’s because it’s ever-evolving.”Amanda also shared one secret to their enduring marriage – she still “fancies” Chris even after all these years together. Speaking to OK!, she quipped: “The main secret behind a successful marriage is to have a bloody good sense of humour!”Article continues below”Plus, I really fancy Chris. We’ll be eating dinner in a restaurant, he’ll go to the loo, then I’ll look up and catch a glimpse of a man and think he’s fit! Then I’ll realise, “Gosh, that’s my husband!” I still fancy him. Also, Chris challenges me and I challenge him – that’s another secret to a good marriage.” More
