Strictly's Maisie Smith says she's not letting confidence backlash get her down

Strictly Come Dancing star Maisie Smith has hit back at trolls who have slammed her for being “too confident” on the dance floor.

The 19-year-old EastEnders actress appeared on This Morning on Wednesday alongside her professional dance partner Gorka Marquez to discuss being in the bottom two of the BBC dancing competition for the second week in a row.

Speaking to hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, Maisie admitted: “I’ll be honest. I was more upset and guilty because I felt I was the one who ended Max [George] journey on the show, same as Caroline [Quentin].

“In regards to the bottom two, it can happen to anyone. Every week there is a shock.

“No one wants it to be them, but it’s part of the show.”

Holly, 39, quizzed Maisie on the claims being made that the reason she’s not getting votes from Strictly fans is because she’s “too confident”.

The teenager replied: “I’m not letting it get to me. We’re going to power through.

“I’ve had messages from previous contestants and Kevin [Clifton] saying don’t take it personally.

“It’s all part of the experience.”

Maisie was partnered with Kevin Clifton as part of the Children In Need Strictly special last year.

Defending his partner Gorka added: “To be honest, Maisie is the opposite of confident.”

“Maybe it’s because she’s an actress and she gets into the character.

“Every week before the dance she says to me ‘I don’t know what to do’.”

Maisie went on to reveal that when she’s under pressure she puts on a persona, and maybe that’s coming across as her being confident.

“I even get nervous to speak to Claudia [Winkleman] after the dance,” she admitted.

“When I’m under pressure it comes across as I’m super confident but I just want to go home and cuddle my dog.”

Maisie and Gorka are coming back fighting this week with the Quickstep.

Gorka told Holly and Philip: “It’s a great routine. Fans are going to see another side of Maisie again.

“There’s not been one easy dance yet,” Maisie said.

This Morning airs weekdays on ITV at 10am and Strictly Come Dancing continues on BBC One on Saturday night
