Australian singer Helen Reddy dies following dementia battle

Helen Reddy has died aged 78 in Los Angeles.

Reddy who was most famous for her track I Am Woman died on Tuesday afternoon, five years after she was diagnosed with dementia.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed by her children Traci Donat and Jordan Sommers in an emotional Facebook post.

Her death comes just weeks after the life of the hitmaker and activist was depicted in the biopic film, I Am Woman.

Traci and Jordan wrote: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Helen Reddy, on the afternoon of September 29th 2020 in Los Angeles,

The statement continued: “She was a wonderful Mother, Grandmother and a truly formidable woman. Our hearts are broken. But we take comfort in the knowledge that her voice will live on forever.”

Hours before, her son Jordan shared a picture of his mum using three heart emojis as the caption.

Helen’s cause of death has not yet been revealed.

Since being diagnosed with dementia in 2015, Helen had been living in a nursing home in Los Angeles for retired Hollywood superstars.

Helen was the voice behind the women’s rights movement in the 1970s, shown in her biopic.

I Am Woman follow’s the early era of her career, not long after she moved to America from Australia.

At the time of her move, she is said to have only had $200 to her name as a 24-year-old single mum.

The film also shows Helen winning a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal, which saw her thank God during her acceptance speech.

She said: “I’d like to thank God, because she makes everything possible.”

Since the news of her passing, fans have taken to social media to share their condolences.

One tweeted: “God rest the soul of the legendary singer, Helen Reddy. I am speechless.”

While a second added: “Just heard about #HelenReddy Such a beautiful voice.”

“This night just keeps getting worse… #RIPHelenReddy,” said a third.

Helen is survived by her two children as well as granddaughter, Lily.
