Comedian Johnny Battie passes away after six decades of comedy

Scottish comedian Johnny Beattie has died at the age of 93.

The funnyman spent his entire life cementing his status as a comedian as his career spanned over six decades.

For 60 years Johnny has made households howl with laughter with his witty jokes and won the game when it came to the Scottish comedy scene.

The legend died after he reportedly spent a short time in St Margaret’s Hospice.

Johnny found fame over 60 years ago as a stand-up comedian and then went into being a Scottish actor.

In terms of his acting, Johnny was most known for his role as Malcolm Hamilton in soap River City.

His other famous roles include his appearances in sketch show Scotch & Wry and sitcom Rab C Nesbitt.

During the decades of his success he also scooped-up an MBE.

After six decades of making people’s sides hurt from laughing, Johnny announced in April 2015 that he was retiring, in his 80s.

The star was also married for 33 years to his late wife Kitty who tragically died over twenty years ago.

Kitty died after a battle with cancer in 1993, shortly after their separation in 1985.

The couple had four children including Maureen, who went on to star in Casualty, and Louise, who quit acting to become a solicitor, along with sons Paul and Mark.

Johnny was born in Glasgow and comes from a working class background.

As well as telly roles, the former shipyard worker also starred in the theatre with panto performances.

Johnny appeared alongside Hollywood star Liam Neeson in the 1990 film The Big Man.

In River City Johnny played Shieldinch’s loveable pensioner Malcolm Henderson since the BBC soap was launched in 2002, left the programme in 2015 after a bout of ill health where he announced his retirement.

The former Govan shipyard worker first got into showbiz after joining an amateur dramatic show in 1951.

He also became a TV quiz show host on STV’s Now You See It in the 1980s.
