Emmerdale ’s Lydia Hart could be set to face serious heartache in upcoming scenes, soap star Karen Blick has revealed.
As the newlywed debates over whether to undergo medical tests, the 45-year-old actress speculated about her results – and the devastation they could cause.
With Huntington’s disease running in her family, Lydia is fearing she could be suffering from the same hereditary illness.
Affecting the brain and nervous system, Huntington’s disease is an inherited condition.
Upcoming scenes could see Lydia face her fears and test to see whether she suffers from the same disease that claimed her father’s life.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Karen described how Lydia might react to the results if it is confirmed she suffers from Huntington’s disease.
Karen hinted the news could lead to a breakdown in her marriage with Sam Dingle, as she said: “I think sometimes Lydia shoots from the hip and goes ‘right that’s it, I’m off’.”

Referring to Sam’s late wife Alice, who died from cancer in 2006, she went on: “One of two things could happen.
“She could think, ‘this is awful, I need to get out of here because I don’t want to be a burden on Sam, he went through that awful time with Alice and I don’t want to do that’ and she might leg it as she has done in the past, just disappear.”
However, Karen also suggested Lydia might stay with Sam, turning to him for support as they battle the effects of the disease together.

She said: “Maybe she’ll sit down with Sam and they’ll form a plan as her condition deteriorated of how she would be cared for, what her wishes would be, and maybe go about it that way.”
Karen explained she was grateful for the opportunity to act out Lydia’s health battle, branding the experience as a “challenge”.
She said: “Whenever you get a fantastic story as an actor it’s a double-edged sword, you’re delighted to be able to really get your teeth into it, but there is the challenge of ‘I need to do this justice’.

“It’s a really powerful storyline that affects so many families and individuals across the world, and people in generations of families that have been affected by this disease, and having spoken to people and done research, you understand the impact that has on families.
“The challenge (of Lydia being diagnosed with Huntington’s) would be massive, so as an actor I would embrace it, but would I be daunted by it? Most definitely.”
What will be the outcome of Lydia’s tests?
Emmerdale currently airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7pm on ITV.
