Holly Willoughby brands man 'stupid' on This Morning over lockdown rule-breaking

Holly Willoughby branded a This Morning caller’s behaviour as “stupid” during a phone-in session on yesterday’s show.

Maggie called up the ITV studios over concerns for her elderly mum, claiming her partner had put her “mum’s life in danger”.

Though the 74-year-old is in the at-risk category during the coronavirus pandemic, her partner recently sat in her mum’s lounge for half an hour to keep the elderly woman company.

Following Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s advice on Monday, the over-70s are advised to “take particular care” as they fall in the vulnerable category.

Speaking over the phone, Maggie said: “I ordered a parcel for my mum. My partner is going in to work and he said he’d drop it off for her. He got back yesterday and I understand that Mum invited him in.

“He went in and sat in the lounge with her for half an hour. I’m so cross and upset that he’s put my mum’s life in danger. I might be overreacting.”

Holly, 39, insisted Maggie wasn’t overreacting, before agreeing that it was a “stupid thing to do”.

The mum-of-three explained that while her partner’s intentions had been good, breaking the social isolation restrictions can cost lives.

She said: “He really, really shouldn’t have done that. The only thing you can take from this is that his intention was to do a good thing.

“But you’re absolutely right, it was a stupid thing to do and the situation we find ourselves at the moment he shouldn’t have done it.”

Holly claimed communication would be key to resolving the issue with her partner, urging Maggie to open up about her fears.

She said: “I know, what you’ve just got to say is: ‘Look, the reason I feel this angry is because I’m scared. I’m scared for her, she’s 74, she’s on her own.

“‘All I want to do is give her a hug but I’m scared she’s going to catch this and in her age bracket this is a dangerous situation for her to be in, so I’m angry with you because it comes from fear.'”

Phillip Schofield also weighed in on the conversation, admitting that Maggie ought to “hope for the best” going forward.

He said: “There are many people who are older who come through this perfectly OK. Obviously we hope that is never the situation.”

Jokingly, Phil finished with some lighthearted advice for telling-off her partner, saying: “Shout at him and then you’re going to have to move on.”

This Morning airs on weekdays at 10am on ITV
