Kate Garraway FaceTimes critically-ill husband and 'believes he can hear us'

Kate Garraway has given an emotional update on her critically-ill husband after FaceTiming him as he lies in intensive care.

It has been almost six weeks since Derek Draper, 52, was taken to hospital where he tested positive for the deadly coronavirus Covid-19.

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate, 53, who herself had mild symptoms, has vowed not to give up hope they will soon be reunited.

And during the 8pm weekly Clap for Carers tribute on Thursday night, she was able to FaceTime him for the first time since he entered hospital.

In a moving message posted on Instagram, she wrote: “I believe he can hear us”.

She shared it alongside a video showing her and Derek’s son playing with lego.

The I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! alumni went on to tell of her joy at the thought of Derek listening.

Her heartwarming statement read: “So our #nhsclap was a little different tonight.

“We still clapped & cheered as much as ever but I couldn’t film on my phone as had Derek on FaceTime throughout! – of course, we can’t KNOW but I believe he can hear us & thought at least the incredible @nhs team’s looking after him would hear a fraction of our gratitude.

“Billy made this for his Dad’s carers to show how much he means to our family & to say thank you for fighting to bring him back to us.”

She went on to say: ” I am hoping they will let Derek have it by his bed. But even if they can’t THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts – you are superheroes.

“Love to all in these terrible times – the separation from loved ones whatever the reason is so tough.”

Derek has remained in a critical condition in ICU for several weeks.

Last week, Kate said he is “still with us, fighting so hard”.

She has since stepped back from fronting ITV’s Good Morning Britain in order to stay at home with her two children, Darcey, 14, and William, 11.

She also recently laid bare how these have been the “hardest weeks” of her life since Derek was admitted to hospital.

She has been keeping her fans and friends updated on his condition by sending messages to her tele colleagues and on her various social media pages.

Rochelle Humes replied to her latest update: “Praying for you all and sending lots of love.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV One.
