A dodgy Italian accent prevented Maya Jama from landing her first blockbuster role.
The DJ auditioned to star alongside Will Ferrell in Netflix ’s Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga but failed to roll her Rs sufficiently.
Maya told OK! magazine: “I went for the role of the Italian lady and my Italian accent was so trash!
“I didn’t expect to get that one. I try to take each no as that it wasn’t right for me or I need to work harder.”
The presenter has since gone on to star alongside Katherine Ryan in The Duchess and teased she has “other” film roles coming soon.

The beauty plays the character of Sandra in The Duchess, which was released on Netflix in September.
The six-episode web comedy follows Katherine Ryan’s character, also called Katherine, as she navigates life as a single mum, juggling her career, daughter and love life.
Maya shot to fame as rapper Stormzy’s now-ex-girlfriend but has since gone on to carve out her own media career and is a regular on television now.

The 26-year-old has starred on the likes of ITV show Cannonball, MTV’s True Love or True Lies and, most recently, Peter Crouch: Save Our Summer on BBC One.
She recently left BBC Radio 1 after two years, saying she had “a lot of exciting commitments” coming up in the future which would clash with her radio show.
Between 2018 and her exit in May of 2020, Maya worked on three shows – Scott Mills as a co-presenter, Radio 1’s Greatest Hits and her own self-titled slot.
