Only one person has ever beaten Phillip Schofield's The Cube since first airing

Phillip Schofield returns to our TV screens tonight with The Million Pound Cube.

The stakes are higher than ever before as contestants attempt seemingly simple tasks inside the iconic Perspex box.

The object of the game is to complete a series of challenges from within the 4m x 4m box, with a chance to win a top price of £250,000.

But now, the new Million Pound Cube allows players to compete for a life-changing £1,000,000.

Each contestant has nine lives, and when they make an unsuccessful attempt, one life is lost.

The challenges can look simple to the outside eye – but it is far from it.

Here we take a look at the contestants who have beaten The Cube so far.

Who has beaten The Cube?

No one has beaten The Cube in normal episodes since the show started airing in 2009.

The only person to ever have won the top prize is Olympic champion Mo Farah.

In fact, he is the only person to have ever attempted the seventh and last game.

He took part in a charity version of the show in 2012, becoming the first and only person to win the top prize.

During the ninth series, the runner stormed through each challenge – bagging the £250,000 prize.

Host Phillip said: “Every single person who walks out onto that stage thinks, ‘I’m going to beat The Cube’. But apart from Mo Farah, they’ve all come apart at the seams.

“We were worried that we’d come up with a game that was unbeatable, but with Mo Farah’s combination of serenity, calmness and dedication on the night saw him sail through to win the top prize in 2012.

“Nobody has done it since. The celebrities are playing for charity, so that does mean there’s extra pressure.”

Although Mo is the only one to have beaten The Cube, others have come close, for example Paddy McGuinness and Alesha Dixon in 2014.

It was a Text Santa charity special, where they played as a two player team.

It consisted of only three games worth £1,000, £50,000 and £100,000, and they were given five lives and a “Simplify” lifeline.

There have been five £100,000 winners of The Cube.

They are Johnny Lowry in 2009, Paul McDonald in 2010, McFly’s Tom Fletcher (for charity) in 2011, Luke in 2011 and The Saturday’s Mollie King (for charity) in 2014.

The Million Pound Cube airs tonight at 9pm on ITV
