BBC Breakfast’sDan Walker found himself in hot water on Monday morning, after a cheeky dig that left weather presenter Carol Kirkwood furious.
Dan was presenting the show from the red sofa alongside co-star Sally Nugent to deliver the news of the day, with a heavy focus on the situation in Afghanistan.
After a brief pause, the pair turned to Carol to get a weather update – but Dan couldn’t resist a cheeky barb at Carol’s expense.
“Shall we get some weather?” Dan asked Sally, as the studio camera panned out to show Carol looking radiant in a bright green dress.
Sally chipped in: “Shall we? With Carol?”
While Carol took to the green screen to present the weather, Dan asked: “Carol. How are you?”
But the astute weather girl hadn’t missed Dan’s question, as she quipped: “Now, do you have a choice, you two?”
Dan awkwardly replied: “Er, not really. But we just thought we’d play it as if we did have a choice! We’ve got nothing else to go to, Carol, so we need you!”
Carol wasn’t having any of Dan’s cheeky attitude, as she sarcastically responded: “That’s a real compliment – thanks Dan! Shouldn’t you be on holiday again?”
Giggling with Sally on the sofa, Dan insisted: “I’ve had a month off!”
“Have another one!” Carol urged before turning back to the weather report – leaving both hosts in absolute hysterics.
Poor Dan hasn’t had much of a break, because during his absence from the BBC Breakfast set, he was actually presenting a special Olympics-themed version of the show alongside medal winner Sam Quek.
After Dan’s coverage ended, he did take a brief respite to “spend time with family”, leaving usual co-star Louise Minchin to present alongside various other hosts.
Taking to his Instagram account, Dan shared a selection of sweet family snaps from a holiday to York, explaining in the caption: “We’ve had a lovely week having fun around York (with a little trip to the Royal Armouries in Leeds).
“We have such a beautiful country to explore & Yorkshire is a gorgeous county.”
But his absence had left fans clamouring to know when he would be back, as one asked Louise on Twitter: “When is the lovely @mrdanwalker joining you again Louise? Or is he having time off to train for @bbcstrictly?”
Louise was quick to assure them: “He will be back soon, don’t worry.”
Dan did briefly appear back on Breakfast via video link to reveal that he’s set for a stint on this year’s Strictly Come Dancing, leaving Louise in absolute shock.
BBC Breakfast airs from 6am every day on BBC One.
