Big Breakfast viewers left divided as some brand Channel 4 revamp 'unwatchable'

Channel 4’s Big Breakfast received mixed reviews from spectators on Friday morning, as the popular show made an explosive return onto screens.

The much loved light entertainment programme first aired in 1992, but was revamped with presenters Mo Gilligan and AJ Odudu taking the reins for a one-off special.

However, although the show amused some viewers, others were not feeling the new format, and took to Twitter to air their thoughts.

One fan penned: “This is awful. Unwatchable even.”

Another said: “Come back Johnny and Denise, all is forgiven.”

A third chimed: “If anyone is in need of erasing brain cells then tune in to.”

But others were loving the new format and begged for Channel 4 to make it a permanent fixture in their schedules.

One fan tweeted: “I didn’t get to see much of the Big Breakfast but I did see their Zig & Zag joke and a few other bits and… well, it’s a shame this is a one-off, really!”

“#Bigbreakfast is absolutely the morning vibe I needed. New but nostalgic. Pure fun,” another quipped.

A third wrote: “They’d be stupid not to do a full series after this. Exactly what morning TV should be. And some fun!”

While a fourth commented: “BRING IT BACK For Real… So Good Mo and AJ .. Great pair.. xx.”

Big Breakfast was previously a big hit for Channel 4 and helped launch the careers of of presenting legends Chris Evans, Johnny Vaughan, Denise van Outen and Zoe Ball.

As part of Channel 4’s Black to Front diversity initiative, the broadcaster will be hosting a number of their shows with exclusively Black cast members and behind-the-scenes crew.

Big Breakfast was no exception to this, as presenters Mo and AJ hosted the programme from the original East London location.

The presenters were also joined by newsreader Phil Gayle, comedian Judi Love and Love Island’s Toby Aromolaran.

Viewers at home picked up on the diversity also applauded the broadcaster for making the statement.

One fan tweeted: “Desmonds first thing and now a beautiful black #bigbreakfast. Joyous TV. JOYOUS. @Channel4 this is rocking. If anyone wants me I will be watching TV history today.”
