Jamie Spears, who previously agreed to step down as conservator of Britney Spears’ estate, has claimed that his daughter’s struggles with “addiction and mental health issues” are far more serious than the public knows.
Britney, 39, started her court battle to remove her father as conservator and maintain her own rights after she accused him of abuse.
After stepping down, he has filed court documents which claim that people should “praise him for the job he has done”.
It comes as his lawyer previously stated that it was “debatable” whether a change in conservator would be in her best interests, but it was agreed that he would step down.
Earlier this month, Mr Spears’ lawyer filed a 15-page court document to Los Angeles County Court which read: “If the public knew all the facts of Ms Spears’ personal life, not only her highs but also her lows, all of the addiction and mental health issues that she has struggled with, and all of the challenges of the Conservatorship, they would praise Mr Spears for the job he has done, not vilify him.”
The documents went on to say: “But the public does not know all the facts, and they have no right to know, so there will be no public redemption for Mr Spears.”
Earlier this month court documents seen by TMZ saw Mr Spears’ lawyer state there were “no grounds for suspending or removing Mr Spears as the Conservator of the Estate”, prior to his decision to step down.
They added: “[Mr Spears] does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her Conservator would be in her best interests.”
Upon his removal, the documents stated: “Regardless of his formal title, Mr Spears will always be Ms Spears’ father, he will always love her unconditionally and he will always look out for her best interests.”
At the time, Britney’s lawyer Mat Rosengart told TMZ they were “pleased but not necessarily surprised” about the decision.
Rosengart explained they would still be investigating the conduct of Mr Spears and others over the past 13 years, adding: “In the interim, rather than making false accusations and taking cheap shots at his own daughter, Mr Spears should step aside immediately.”
